Another fun course that I just learned about this year is Downer's Grove golf club. It's only a 9 hole municipal course, but it's beautifully maintained and has some history.
It was the original home of the Chicago Golf Club and it was the first 18 hole course in the United States. A few years after it opened, the Chicago Golf Club moved to it's current location in Wheaton. The original location stayed open as a public course. At some point it was downsized into a 9 hole course, but a few of the original holes are still in play. Really fun layout. Not super difficult, but some challenges due to mature trees lining the fairways on a few holes. Some good elevation changes too.
It's near my office, so it's perfect to get a quick 9 holes in after work.
