🔧 BUILD IDAFC21's 2014 BMW M235i

General Information

Yes. I have decided to become a BMW M car knob. And yes, I know it's not REALLY an M car, so at least I still get to piss off all the M car purists who don't believe there should be an M on this car. (Or 17 M's, as the case may be. I've counted  )

To begin my knobbery, I shall provide a brief synopsis of the car, for the plebs that are unaware of what they're looking at. A few years ago the 2 series replaced the love-it-or-hate-it 1 series coupes as BMW's smallest car in the lineup. It got a complete redesign to make it fall more in line w/ the looks of the 3 and 4 series. It really does look like a mini 4 series. Your early options were a 220i or 228i, which had a 4 cylinder turbo engine, and were boring.

OR. You could go for the M235i. At the time there were no announcements about an M2 model, so this was the most M model you could get for the 2 series. What you got, roughly, were redesigned front and rear bumpers, better wheels and tires, larger M sport 4 piston/2 piston brakes, adaptive suspension, that wonderful M steering wheel, and most importantly, a proper turbocharged straight 6 engine that made 320hp and 330tq. Given the 235's small stature, (relatively) light weight, and near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, there are many who would actually liken this car to a mini e46 M3.

With that out of the way, the car i purchased is a 2014 with a mere 15k miles on it. I found it at CarMax of all places  and they were asking a very fair price for it, so it piqued my interest. I'd always been kinda interested in these cars, but never really seriously looked into them. I started watching every video review i could find on youtube, and it didn't take long to figure out this is a car I would like to own. Went and looked at it at carmax, drove it, and found that reviews had not been overexaggerated. I offered up my ST as a trade, they gave me what I thought was a pretty fair offer for a trade in, bada bing bada boom, you guys know how car deals work, the ST is gone, and this is now in my driveway.

Last night at carmax.

As you can see I went with God's transmission, the ZF 8 speed auto. I was quite impressed with this transmission, and after 13 straight years of driving nothing but manuals, I was ready for something a little different. With how quick this trans shifts it's almost hard to believe its not a dual clutch. Plus it gets the DSG farts, even tho its not a dsg. And it makes me giggle.

I'll try and get some more pics this weekend if i get ambitious enough to give this car a decent detail. It definitely needs it after sitting on that carmax lot for god knows how long. Theres a lotta hard water spots on the roof/trunk/hood i need to deal with. Otherwise its actually in pretty damn good shape. Couple scratches here and there, but again, it is a 2014 so i expect a few of those. At 15k miles this thing wasnt driven much more than I drove my ST

It was optioned out fairly nice. I had to educate myself on BMW packages, but it does have the premium package, tech package, and driver assist package. I thought it might have had the cold weather package, but i think I just have heated seats. Cuz theres no button on the steering column for the heated steering wheel, and Im not sure if i have the headlight washers. The plates are there, but I think they're there on all the cars whether you have the system or not. Sadly I dont have the harmon kardon sound system, and this standard 6 speaker system just does not compare to the 10 speaker system that was in the ST. I'm also unsure whether I have the optional locking LSD, or the regular open diff. Only way to tell that would be to jack the rear up and try and turn the wheels and see what happens. Or I could just take the car out and try and drift it

Overall the way this car was optioned out it was easily a $50k+ car brand new. I did not pay anything anywhere near that  That was actually one of the complaints people had about this car when it came out. BMW hid a lotta things that probably should have been standard on this car behind their option packages. I would NOT reccomend anyone buy one of these cars brand new, but in the used market, if you can find the right one, I feel like these are quickly becoming the bargain of the century for the amount of car you can get for the money. So far I love everything this car does, and theres so much god damn tech in this car its gonna take me a month to figure out everything this car can do. This morning before I went to work I programmed one radio station in, and paired the bluetooth on my phone, and that was it

I still have the GTO at the moment. My ultimate plan was to find a car that could replace both of my cars because I've been growing tired of the 2 car thing. This car is definitely a competent replacement. In acquiring this car, I didn't have to make as much of a down payment as I thought I would to hit my target payment, so it's not AS crucial for me to sell the GTO, but I don't know. It's something im struggling with right now  But I will say anything is for sale for the right price. This may come a bit out of left field for a select few who thought I may have been headed in a drastically different direction, but I feel like I've made the right choice, as I usually see at least 11 of the OTHER car on every corner on my short 10 minute commute to work every day, and these are definitely not on every corner. Plus as it turns out insurance was way cheaper on this car than it would have been on the OTHER car.

Anyways, TL : DR. ST-OUT. BMW-IN. #Knoblife

I got no plans to go crazy with fueling. Car will be seeing the usual shit 91 mostly piped in from Cali.
Copy. IMHO a custom tune is safer and more efficient. I think Wedge is only about $225 for a custom tune. I would not recommend self tuning. I have many years of tuning cars under my belt and it took me about a year of futzing to get it where I want it.

I know you don’t want to go crazy, tune won’t hurt the car though. These motors are really detuned from the factory. Driveline is safe to 550-600hp, and you’ll never get close to that on stock turbo

Probably not the update you were all expecting next, but neither was I. A few weeks ago I noticed my windshield washers weren't spraying anymore. First thought was, low fluid? (Even tho I never got a warning), so I dumped a bunch of fresh fluid in (more on that later). Still nothing. Then I noticed my headlight washers were working, so now I'm thinking pump. Tried to look for a fuse/relay first, you know, NORMAL troubleshooting for most cars, :ROFLMAO: Yeah, BMW no. First off, bmw labels nothing on their fuse boxes. You have to dig a cheat sheet out of the trunk which is even more cryptic, and when I finally found the washer symbol on the sheet, instead of a numbered fuse location, it just has a little pictograph of a car up on a lift. That doesn't mean you have to get under the car, thats just BMW telling you "Yeahhh, you maybe just wanna take this to a mechanic."

After further research, I come to learn of a unit BMW uses call the FEM (front electronic module), which resides in the passenger footwell and controls everything from the comfort access system/door locks/windows/seat heating/etc, and yes, the washer system. It also has fuses on it, but none of those are directly linked to the washer system. So now I'm thinking screw it, pump probably just took a dump, as they are one to do on BMW's, so I finally ordered a new one up (Like 10 bucks on amazon), and set out to replacing it today.

Of course BMW being BMW, the washer tank is literally molded into the front fender, which requires you to take the tire and fender lining off to even access it. The fender lining is held on by a random mix of 8mm and 10mm bolts, and few T30 torx bolts just to change things up. Here's everything finally off.

And HERES the washer tank. German engineering!!

gM0TPkr.jpg

Thankfully its only held on by one bolt and a couple tabs, so a couple yanks and a twist later, shes out. However, about all that washer fluid I dumped in when the pump first went out, well in removing the tank you have to tilt it, so it all comes pouring back out the fill hole at the top, plus once you pull the pump out, whatevers left drains out of the bottom. Hence the bucket, and discolored brake disc that got a slight bath  The long pump is for the headlight washers, the rear spot is the for the windshield, and there's spot for a THIRD pump for cars that have rear window washers also.

Stock pump vs new pump

There's a rubber grommet/screen that the pump sits down into, and this is the item that normally gets clogged w/ slime and gunk depending on what kinda climate you live in and what kinda washer fluid you use. I didn't realize until after I'd ordered it that my new pump didn't come w/ a new grommet, but mine was pristine, so there were no issues reusing it.

All better! Set the tank back in and dumped some fresh fluid in to give it a quick test, and success!! Job well done. Wonder what a BMW mechanic would have charged for this...

Did you have this ceramic coated? IDAFC21 IDAFC21

Yeah, I did it myself around Feb last year (had to check, feels like its been 2 years  ), it could definitely use a refresh tho. This car is out in the elements more than it's not, and the sun out here is not kind to anything you try to protect the car with. Thinking about going over the car w/ some carpro essence plus, then maybe finish it w/ some carpro gliss. Tho...I don't know if you're really supposed to use those 2 together, as the essence plus is essentially an si02 coating, but it's also supposed to be able to remove any minor swirls or scratches on the existing coating w/out removing it.

So I don't know why I never posted it in my own thread, but I've had these guys sitting on my floor since July thanks to the wonderful TCG Parts Direct!

Pretty decent drop but not completely slammed. I'll test this out for a couple days and see if i like where it sits. I do have some wheel spacers incoming as well, so if they get here by the weekend I'll toss those on and see what it does. I don't know if i'll have to raise it up a bit after I get the spacers in.

My short drive drive home was quite pleasant. These things are awesome. Definitely more firm and responsive than stock, but they also handle bumps wayyy better than the stock suspension as well. Not jarring or harsh at all. Feels like its going to be a pretty nice setup for the street, which is what they were designed for, so I'm happy. Getting into my driveway was completely fine, the real test will be the big speed humps I have to climb over getting into work tomorrow

The plan still is to get a nice set of wheels, once I can find something I actually like, but isnt also baller expensive, cuz this is still my daily, and I likely WILL curb them on something at some point :roflpicard:

So that's whats going on. I've had this car for....over 3 years now? And this is the first major aftermarket mod I've done to it. Well, first aftermarket mod that's actually gone on the car. (For anyone that's actually followed this thead, the downpipe I impulse purchased back in january is also still sitting on my floor  I still need to collect some other parts before I consider throwing that in)

Looks great. Is the front tire balding ? or maybe it's just the picture...

Its starting to get there. I probably will need tires before long. Which is why i really should decide on some wheels soon...

Got thru my first real day w/ the car and I still have a front bumper! Even driving over the big speed humps I need to get over to get into work the only minor scraping I ever heard was coming from those rubber flaps underneath my bumper. My bumper itself is in no real danger, except from the rabbit I NEARLY hit that ran out in front of me just before I got to my building this morning. Good thing I also had the brake fluid flushed when it was getting the work done.

I still may raise it up SLIGHTLY this weekend when Im messing w/ the wheel spacers. If I run my finger along the bottom of the fender I still hit tire, and I've got bony fingers. Overall still impressed w/ it so far tho. I'm actually still surprised how tame it all feels. Guess thats what you get with a quality system

Congrats dude! Welcome to the M club. I bought my F80 through CarMax and have zero complaints to say about the process. As straight forward as can be.

Thanks!

Every time I check out this thread I regret not buying that M235i I test drove...

You may regret it but I guarantee your wallet doesnt!

Damn I just ran across this, looks awesome Paul!!!

Thanks Jim!!

And lookee what just showed up today! 12mm for the front and 15mm for the rear

b2z5oUK.jpg

I'll play with these this weekend, if I can actually get my car up in the air  My jack wouldnt fit under this car when the suspension was STOCK. I do have race ramps tho, so hopefully I get partially on those and then get the jack under to lift it the rest of the way.

Looks great lowered. The wheel spacers will help the wheel gap disappear more and give it an even lower appearance.

And you are lucky you can have it low and not worry about shitty roads like we have. haha

Idiot! haha
