Problem with a boat is the initial investment isn't too bad but then you factor in maintenance, slip fees, fuel, insurance and it gets out of hand. Offroad stuff does require more dedicated weekends because you have to travel to ride but you basically buy it and you're done. The boat cost you more money when you're not using it than the SxS. I'm lucky enough to have a free slip, if it wasn't for that I would never boat.



Sorry man, down payment on a new ATV > initial investment into a sled and gear just to be not content and want a newer, more expensive sled.

pontoon boats, like he was considering, maintenance is low as shit, there isn't really anything to maintain. 4 stroke, you're right. But with any boat there's acid washing the toons, winterizing and fogging.

fuel, sure but the side by side would use comparable amounts per usage time. Not even close

insurance on a boat will be less than a UTV i'm willing to bet. Nope, well maybe. On an ATV it isn't.

usage costs for utv- must pay to fuel the truck, maintain the trailer more seriously than the boat, and then pay for lodging wherever you wind up... a few trips a year will easily equal the 1500-1700 a year for a boat slip. You act like you don't have to pay for gas to drive to a boat or maintain a boat trailer. Take the boat anywhere else and the gas and trailer maintenance is more for a boat.

not to mention, whole family and friends will fit on a pontooner... side by side... unless he's buying a 4-6 seater, or a few of them, famdamily is staying behind.This is valid.

snowmobiles are more to insure than boats.... so i figured utv's would be that way as well.

my 2010 skidoo cost more to insure than the 50k boat my dad had at the time.

4 stroke, or 2 stroke outboard... no maintenance really, shit, an evinrude will winterize itself.

boat will get 2-4 mpg.. and you aren't going to go more than 20-40 miles in a day. whereas utv- 8-12 mpg? but you're going to do 50-100 miles in a day. it's a wash.

boat trailer will require far less maintenance since chances are, if the boat stayed in the chain, the trailer will see less miles in the next 5 years, than a UTV/side by side trailer would see in a summer.

i guess what im getting at, is you could easily use a boat more than 8-10 full days a year without having to go so far.

my issue with having a side by side, would be knowing i had a 3-4 hour drive at minimum, to go use it more than just dicking around in a field somewhere.

I can't get on the sport SxS bandwagon. Hell, I maybe rode trails 4 or 5 times this season. I do use the shit out of it around the property though so it fulfills a slightly different need for me. I want to get a Gator, ranger, defender, etc but it will maybe see a trail twice a year.

Good question. I really don't know to be honest. I'm just so used to the Hayward and up trails because that's all I ride.

Either one takes dedication. I have ridden my ATV more this year alone than I have been on either of my boats in the last 3-4 years combined. With a busy life and family what's the odds of everyone coming out on a boat more than a couple times compared to getting out and riding on your own to recharge your batteries? There is actually a few places within 2 hours that has some good riding around the area. A new ORV park opened in McHenry last fall.

I boat a lot and I feel it's pretty cheap for me probably 25-30 day trips a season possibly more I went camping for a week twice and boated every day each time, I have 2 boats but they were both cheap, one sits in the water at the river all season and one I trailer places when I want to boat at different lakes

Either one takes dedication. I have ridden my ATV more this year alone than I have been on either of my boats in the last 3-4 years combined. i think what's tough for you, is you're a cruise away from where your boat is... if you were less than 15 minutes, you might use it more.

I'm just on Dan's other shoulder playing devil's advocate. Since I bought a 4x4 ATV I love it. I'm having a blast. I went on Frank's Baja last year as was all about getting back on the water after that but never did. Boats are a ton of fun but I feel at this point I'd rather ATV. I think if I ever have kids between 4-12 I would get back into boating. Probably a nice tri-toon or cutty.
