Problem with a boat is the initial investment isn't too bad but then you factor in maintenance, slip fees, fuel, insurance and it gets out of hand. Offroad stuff does require more dedicated weekends because you have to travel to ride but you basically buy it and you're done. The boat cost you more money when you're not using it than the SxS. I'm lucky enough to have a free slip, if it wasn't for that I would never boat.
Sorry man, down payment on a new ATV > initial investment into a sled and gear just to be not content and want a newer, more expensive sled.
Rebuttal in red.pontoon boats, like he was considering, maintenance is low as shit, there isn't really anything to maintain. 4 stroke, you're right. But with any boat there's acid washing the toons, winterizing and fogging.
fuel, sure but the side by side would use comparable amounts per usage time. Not even close
insurance on a boat will be less than a UTV i'm willing to bet. Nope, well maybe. On an ATV it isn't.
usage costs for utv- must pay to fuel the truck, maintain the trailer more seriously than the boat, and then pay for lodging wherever you wind up... a few trips a year will easily equal the 1500-1700 a year for a boat slip. You act like you don't have to pay for gas to drive to a boat or maintain a boat trailer. Take the boat anywhere else and the gas and trailer maintenance is more for a boat.
not to mention, whole family and friends will fit on a pontooner... side by side... unless he's buying a 4-6 seater, or a few of them, famdamily is staying behind. This is valid.
In the wise words of 1MEANGT, "It's only a monthly payment away."
Rebuttal in red.

snowmobiles are more to insure than boats.... so i figured utv's would be that way as well.
my 2010 skidoo cost more to insure than the 50k boat my dad had at the time.
4 stroke, or 2 stroke outboard... no maintenance really, shit, an evinrude will winterize itself.
winterizing & fogging? one in the same... $150 if you pay a marina to do it.
acid washing toons? yeah, ok. $100 a season.
im not acting like that... driving to the boat is 8.7 miles away for him, from his house, to a marina on the chain. he could do this trip to the marina in anything that gets 20 mpg and not equal one trip north pulling a trailer for the entire season.
boat will get 2-4 mpg.. and you aren't going to go more than 20-40 miles in a day. whereas utv- 8-12 mpg? but you're going to do 50-100 miles in a day. it's a wash.
boat trailer will require far less maintenance since chances are, if the boat stayed in the chain, the trailer will see less miles in the next 5 years, than a UTV/side by side trailer would see in a summer.
side by sides and atv's make more sense to me if you have property up north to use it at without paying for lodging...
how often did you use your atv last year?
What do you define as use? Get on it and ride around a bit or actually taking it some place to ride all day? 8-10 of the latter. That includes a weekend trip with my fuck boi fam of Outlaw, 1MEANGT and Chester Copperpot.
i guess what im getting at, is you could easily use a boat more than 8-10 full days a year without having to go so far.
my issue with having a side by side, would be knowing i had a 3-4 hour drive at minimum, to go use it more than just dicking around in a field somewhere.
I need a divorce and an extra year or so to recover then I would live like him. He is my idol.
Either one takes dedication. I have ridden my ATV more this year alone than I have been on either of my boats in the last 3-4 years combined. With a busy life and family what's the odds of everyone coming out on a boat more than a couple times compared to getting out and riding on your own to recharge your batteries? There is actually a few places within 2 hours that has some good riding around the area. A new ORV park opened in McHenry last fall.
i think what's tough for you, is you're a cruise away from where your boat is... if you were less than 15 minutes, you might use it more.
odds of family going out on a boat? id say pretty significant. especially with kids.
ORV park in McHenry? you mean River Road Rally Park ? or something different?
I don't think you can use side by sides or four wheelers there- mainly meant for trucks/jeeps etc... or you talking somewhere else.
i mean, not to mention, the place can't be more than 100 acres, and has to at most be a few miles of "trails"
I think that's it. If it just opened up last fall than yes. I message the page on FB and they said this Spring they will have new trails open and ATVs and SxS will be allowed.
My problem is it's easy for me to neglect my boat. I sold the toon and it doesn't cost me anything to own my Bayliner and let it sit on the lawn. It will cost me some money to get it sea worthy and dependable again. I just got burnt out on being a tour guide for people every weekend.
im friend's with the property owner's grand daughter. it's a cool setup to have around here, but would hardly justify me spending 20k+ on a sxs
and yeah that makes sense.
i think then what's also tough, is weekdays didn't make sense to you. if weekdays can work (ie... get off work at 2pm and be on the water at 230 pm... it's a win)
I'm just on Dan's other shoulder playing devil's advocate. Since I bought a 4x4 ATV I love it. I'm having a blast. I went on Frank's Baja last year as was all about getting back on the water after that but never did. Boats are a ton of fun but I feel at this point I'd rather ATV. I think if I ever have kids between 4-12 I would get back into boating. Probably a nice tri-toon or cutty.
It's a lot like snowmobiling for me but with boating you at least get more opportunities.
