He has three engineered beams evenly spaced and then tied together on the top bottom front and back with 1" and a quarter plywood. Yes inch and a quarter. All glued and screwed. The sides are the outside of the actual beam.
Seriously you could park a Mack Truck on these. I want to build a set but I think I will substitute standard lumber for the engineered beams. He got the beams for free from his neighbor. They are completely unnecessary though.
Engineered is used for longer unsupported spans. This span is completely supported so all it does is reduce weight.
