The 2019 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison Will Start at $48,045

mam6l9hmsjbfpyszkgxq.png

Back in September, Chevy showed off the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, a skid-plated-up version of the already beefy, front and rear locker-equipped Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. The ZR2 alone costs over $42,000, so it’s no surprise that the Bison is pushing 50.

One of the main features distinguishing the Bison from the standard ZR2 aside from the obvious CHEVROLET grille is the skid plate package, which protects the oil pan, fuel tank, transfer case, and differentials with a “hot-stamped Boron steel” plate designed by American Expedition Vehicles. You might recognize that company as the one that turns Wranglers into pickups.

Other changes for the Bison are the steel front and rear bumpers, the latter of which have integrated recovery hooks. And there’s also the AEV wheels, the big fender flares, and the optional snorkel, which actually looks pretty badass—kind of like an arm with a flexing bicep.

Chevy and AEV announced today that all of this will cost an additional $5,750 over the standard ZR2. This brings the total price to $48,045 for the extended cab and $49,645 for the crew cab.

That makes it one of the most expensive mid-size trucks you can buy today, though it’s still well under the larger Ford Raptor’s base price of over $54,000. It will be interesting to see what Jeep pulls out of its pocket when it shows off its own mid-size pickup later this month in LA.

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado RST's Face Lets Everyone Know It's a Chevy

The mid-size truck scene is heating up, with the new 2019 Ford Ranger and the upcoming Jeep truck on the horizon. So it’s no surprise to see Chevrolet showing off two new 2019 Chevy Colorado special editions: a street-oriented model called the RST and an off-road-oriented model called the “Trail Runner.” And the grille on that RST is really something.

Chevy is marketing the two new special editions as celebrations for over 400,000 Colorados sold since the new generation launched for 2015. First, the new Trail Runner takes a Z71—which comes with hardware like Rancho off-road shocks, a transfer case shield, and an automatic rear locker—and makes standard the front axle and oil pan skid plates that originally launched on the ZR2 but are now optional on Z71s. Also standard with the special edition are the normally-optional Goodyear Duratrac all-terrain tires, as well as the ZR2's rock rails.

Sadly, despite the tough “Trail Runner” name, there’s nothing all-new, here, just certain off-the shelf parts getting bolted to a Colorado Z71. That applies to the styling, too, as Chevy says the front end will have CHEVROLET written in big letters across the grille, just like on the ZR2 Bison, and just like on the other new special edition called the RST (shown at the top).

Strangely, Chevy does not have a photo of the Trail Runner’s front end, just the back side shown above; we’ll have to wait until I have a chance to drive one later this month to see more.

The RST model is basically just a mid-trim LT model with some black trim, black badges, black 20-inch wheels, and of course that ZR2 Bison-esque grille.

So there’s nothing spectacular, here, though I’m not complaining about Chevy building more trucks with more standard off-road hardware. Off-roading is good.

Feeling pressure from a growing number of competitors, Chevrolet has given its entry-level Colorado pickup truck a mid-cycle update that brings a new-look design, among other improvements. The truck will begin arriving in American showrooms during the 2021 model year.

The Colorado borrows a page from the Camaro's play book; Chevrolet explained it asked its designers to visually differentiate the trim levels by giving each one a specific look. We've only seen the desert-wise ZR2 model so far. It wears a taller, wider grille split in half by a flow-through insert that displays the manufacturer's name, while the Bowtie moves next to the driver's side headlight. Chevrolet's trucks have worn its name on their nose before, notably during the late 1960s and the early 1970s, but the emblem has always been right in the middle of the front end.

Chevrolet noted the WT and LT trims will wear new gold-colored Bowtie emblems, while the Z71 will get a black badge like the ZR2's. All variants regardless of trim or cab configuration will receive a tailgate stamped with the name Chevrolet. The trucks currently wear a plastic badge out back.

The ZR2 continues to offer enthusiasts an array of off-road-oriented goodies, including Multimatic shocks, a two-inch suspension lift, electronic locking differentials on both ends, a two-speed transfer case, cast-iron control arms, and a wider track. Skid plate keep the expensive oily bits away from metal-piercing obstacles encountered on the trail. The 2021 redesign adds red tow hooks to the list.

Mechanical specifications remain under wraps. Similarly, we don't know if the nip-and-tuck will extend to the interior, or what effect it will have on pricing, though don't expect the Colorado to get any cheaper. And, since it's going under the knife, it's reasonable to assume the GMC Canyon it's identical to under the sheet metal will also enter the 2021 model year with a fresh face.

Made in Missouri, the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado will go on sale early during the 2020 calendar year. Pricing information and details about the rest of the range will emerge in the weeks leading up to its on-sale date. When it lands, the Colorado will compete in the same rejuvenated segment as the Jeep Gladiator, the Ford Ranger, the Toyota Tacoma, and the prehistoric Nissan Frontier.

i thought the suspension inhibited trailer capacity on those, raptor style.

Likely both:

The ZR2 can be had in two cab configurations (extended or crew cab) and with two engine options (3.6L gas V6 or a 2.8L turbo-diesel I4). ZR2 front grill and bumper have been redesigned to allow a much greater approach angle for rock crawling. This also altered the air flow into the radiator and decreased the amount of cooling potential. In turn, this lowered the maximum towing rating down to 5,000 lbs. A regular turbo-diesel Chevy Colorado is rated at a maximum of 7,700 lbs. This is a drastic decrease in towing capability, but it is still enough to bring a small RV trailer, a small boat, or several dirt bikes along with you.
