🔧 BUILD 1971 Nova - Work in Progress

General Information

1971 Nova - Insanity in Progress

I bought this Nova last year when I sold my mustang, I was a active member here when this was CSVT so all the info of my old car is still on this site. Some of you know me from other sites as well as some of the old CSVT members who are still around. I apologize in advance for being a little long winded.

I was looking to get back into a classic muscle car that I could restore and modify to my liking. I choose a Nova since they are cheap and my wife wanted it to be a chevy. I enjoy all makes/models domestic or import which is why I enjoy TCG.

Specs:
1971 2 Door Nova factory v8 auto

Engine
350 block 383 stroker
Cam - unknown (I have several cam cards from the previous owners not sure which one is installed)
Rods/pistons - unknown
Heads - stock
Edelbrock intake - unknown which model
Holley 750 double pumper

Trans
700R4
3200 Stall
Shift Kit - Jegs brand

Rearend
10 bolt 8.5
3:56 gears

I knew the car needed some work before I bought it....I just underestimated how bad some of it was going to be. When I got the car the owner I purchased it from had just primer bombed the car and splatter painted the trunk (was still fresh when I went to look at the car). I would have still bought the car but would have negotiated a better price, but hey live and learn. The guy I bought the car from purchased the car from an elderly couple in Ohio who had a binder of documentation which was a huge selling point to me. Unfortunately I didn't look closely to see that the receipts didn't have much specific information. So the documentation only shows dates and what parts were replaced not what they were replaced with (for the most part anyways.) Again no biggie.

The car had 3 paint jobs in it's life plus the primer the guy I bought the car from put on it. Under the primer was a Suzuki gold that was applied in 2002. (what a FUGLY ass color) under the gold was a red. Whenever the red was put on the car it also had extensive body filler applied but no rust or sheet metal repair, more on that later. Under the red was a factory correct blue. The cowl tag says the car should be Sandalwood, while I did find it on a few parts of the car this leads me to believe someone painted the car early on in it's life or worse someone swapped the vin and cowl tag to another car :dunno: . Also there were a few spots where Green was found, I'm assuming a donor car or junk yard parts replacement. To be honest with all the documentation I have it just confuses things even further. The car was also in a few fender benders, the worst being the passenger front fender.

In 2001 the whole suspension was replaced with stock equipment minus air shocks, this was also when the whole drive line was overhauled and the engine was turned into a 383 stroker. I'm just guessing and based on some info I've accumulated from Steves Nova Site SNS, everyone seems to agree this theoretical combo should be around 350-400hp 400+tq.

I drove the car for a few weeks and fixed some legal and safety equipment such as putting on the rear bumper, side mirrors and attaching the seat belts. The car actually drives pretty good, has some good low end torque and the trans shifts firm. These were all the reasons I purchased the car as I didn't want to blow the budget replacing the mechanical's right away while I concentrated on restoring the body and getting it in paint. I was originally hoping to have it in paint in early spring of this year. Currently it may see paint by spring summer of 2015. (crosses fingers)

Goals:
For now I want a nice cruiser that's got some decent hp/tq. I'd like to drive it around town and take it to a few cruises/car shows. During winter I always like to tinker and do upgrades.

My unrealistic dream goal would be to turn it into a pro-touring car. Sitting low on 18x10 or larger wheels. I would also drop in a LS series engine maybe a LQ4 on a tight budget or go wild with a LS3/6 variation. The car will stay an auto, I know some people won't understand that but I love a good auto as much as banging gears in a stick car.

Short term goals that are more realistic is to just restore the vehicle to good quality, I will keep the drivetrain as it is for now as it's in good shape and if anything blows up take it to the next level at that time (budget pending of course). The body will be fully repaired and painted by myself. It will be painted a blue (unsure of which specific color code at this time) but it will be a medium to dark hue.

Bottom line is all work will be done by me, in my garage with whatever tools I currently have or acquire. Hence the whole reason for purchasing this car.

Now to what's happened since I started work along with pics.

As I purchased it, as you can see the body doesn't look bad at all. Looking at it very throughly I could tell there was bondo/mud applied and I did notice some rust in the rear quarters and in the trunk area (which is common for these cars) I also noticed the body bushings were bad again another common problem with age.

Engine Bay, looks can be decieving, the whole front accessory system is a redneck engineer mess along with the fan and rad shroud.

Pics of the interior, the seats are trashed and the carpet doesn't fit right as it's either a universal or not the correct for this make/model/year.

I'll break this up into a few posts.

I am tired of replacing sheet metal, I would like to be at the stage where I can spray some epoxy and get back to some of the mechanicals.

That ain't going to be soon

I am done with both rear quarters, the dents in the drivers door. So I moved on to the dents in the passenger side which were much worse.

I used the stud welder to fix the dents, there will be 2 small sections of metal replacement. I will have to get to those later as I am still debating how I am going to tackle them.

The big dent

The smaller ones

Didn't snap any during pics just the after. The small dings came out near perfect, the large debt will need a little more filler.

Got a new angle grinder for the one that died last month, slapped a wire wheel on it and went to town on the weatherstripping channel for the trunk lid.

Next up will be the surgery on the passenger front fender.

I think I showed this before but it still baffles me.

Filler used as a structural mount, this is the backside of the fender behind the wheel opening

The front side

More filler just gooped in the other rotted section. This looks like All-Metal so this was "repaired" some other time in the cars life.

Worked on the passenger fender today, I have to weld in a backing plate for strength. When I reattach and align the fender I will mark and drill the mounting holes.

This was the fender bender, it crumpled the brace that holds the front of the fender in the correct location.

With all that done I put one of the wheels back on to see the fitment wither the tubs, easily another 3 1/2 inches.

Haven't updated this in a few weeks, mainly due to loosing motivation. The more I dig into the car it seems to be 1 step forward 3 steps back and it's really wearing on me.

Stripped the passenger cowl , more rust that needs repair, I will put it on the list and get to it sometime

Cowl

I then put the passenger fender on and spent a few hours trying to align it. Found one of the bolts snapped in the lower bracket. After futzing with and ready to pull my hair out I realized something is just out of whack. I will have to check how the subframe height is setup or the core support because the gap seen in this pic shows how fucked up it is.

I started on the drivers fender so when it comes to aligning everything in the front end it will all be done.

Seem to be missing the fully finished pic but you get the idea. I also pulled the huge dent in the fender by the side marker. Again missing a pic, here is the after.

Now we are at today. Pulled the exhaust, driveshaft and had to disassemble the brakes to pull the rearend.

This is all to install a new crossmember that the upper shock mounts will connect to. Here is the rough marks where it will be cut out.

In doing all the measurements I looked at the tail light panel from inside the trunk area. I found lots of bondo sludge, pulling it off with my hand and now there are a bunch of holes. Looks like I will be patching this or buying a replacement panel.

A few pics of the holes, didn't bother with all the bondo. By this point I was just contemplating tossing a gas can in the car and pulling a Bill

I need a plasma cutter, cutting 1/8th steel ain't no fun with air tools. This was a solid 10 hours today. There is some minor adjustments to be made and I need to cut off the excess that goes beneath the floor before burning it all in.

I took tomorrow off work so hopefully I can finish this then and be able to get the trunk pan in and finish welding everything up.

90% burned in, spent most of the day getting it level side to side and front to back. Then grinding off all the crap in the undercarriage.

I am going to have to media blast the undercarriage, just using wire wheels for the areas I needed to weld was a PITA!

All cut up and prepped

The cross member all trimmed up
990b6a5e717571588bf2a7c36f9fdfa1.jpg

All welded in, I still need to hit a few spots underneath. The welds aren't the greatest, welding 1/8th steel to sheet metal isn't the easiest thing.

Next up is finishing the welds on the wheel tubs

It's been some time since I updated this thread. For my birthday my wife took me to Eastwood and told me to just get what I wanted even if I didn't need it. I rarely buy any "toys" so it was kind of cool getting some toys that I would normally not buy.

First off I picked up a Eastwood 200 ac/dc tig welder with all the supporting accessories along with another welding cart. I know it's not a Lincoln or Miller but the Mig welder from Eastwood has worked like a champ, plus I only do this as a hobby so I don't need the big name brands.

I also picked up a Eastwood plasma cutter, pretty nifty little cutter and have used this more than my cutting wheels.

Both welders and the plasma cutter below the tig on the cart.

4fba1a5f3bde9a8313e7663fdeda2b0b.jpg

I also picked up a sheet metal brake, used it a few times to test it out and it takes a bit of learning to get the right bend angle but it's loads better than bending metal in my vice.

25eca784d310a65568a8243c539f74ea.jpg

So I have done some work here and there on the car but motivation has been sparse, plus I am in a standstill on lthe trunk pan till the parts arrive.

The trunk area is all cut and marked ready to go, I need new tank braces that weld in under the trunk pan. I haven't removed the old ones yet since the braces help locate the pan depth.

The new pan had to be sliced in a few areas as the bumpouts for the leaf springs didn't match the new stamped replacement. This will be plug and lap welded instead of butt welded. It's the trunk pan and this will not be an award winning resto/modded car. I will seem seal it all later when I do the whole ass end of the car at once.

What I worked on today was a little accident someone had in my garage when I was out of town last month. I can home to find a table that had some wood projects my wife was working on overturned. It caused a decent dent right along the crease where the drivers quarter was replaced. Now I am kind of thankful as it pointed out that the area was under stress, hence why it creased where the two structures were welded together.

The bitch about is I can't get clear access to it behind the panel. The rear window and its frame limit access. I didn't feel like cutting the inner window frame out so I sliced the weld and have been using my stud welder and a long pry bar to push it back into the correct location. I haven't welded it back together yet as I need to hammer/dolly it back smooth and that will require a second set of hands. Which means that is on hold till a get one my helpers over.

Didn't get a pic of the before as I was a little miffed to have to redo this. So this is the current. Still a bit more to shape but it's getting there.

Was able to get a few hours in the garage, sweating my ass of with it being 103 in the garage. I had to stop an hour ago as I was getting sick and noticed it had been an hour or two since I stopped sweating. Going to relax the rest of the day and hit it again tomorrow night when it's a little cooler out.

I was able to get the drivers side trunk pan brace out, the passenger side I need to put in new metal as its rotted. The driver side was misleading as its crusty in a few spots. So both sides need patches made.

I also worked on the DSE cross member as I didn't trim it flush underneath. Got that all taken care of and once the replacement patches for the braces are fixed there will be shit ton of welding and grinding to do.

All the rest of my replacement panels are in, I have the tail light panel, both trunk pan braces, the rear cross brace that sandwiches the trunk braces to the rear bumper panel and lastly the cowl for the rear windshield.

I am going to stop in at the metal supply store and get some 1x1 square tubing to brace the trunk opening and some 20 gauge and 16 gauge for patch panels.

So hopefully updates will be coming more frequently.

Feels like actual progress

Started out cutting the crusty metal that the trunk pan braces go to and welding in new patches

What the old braces looked like

I was about to put the pan and braces in when I realized it would be easier to put the braces on for the trunk lid.

I fabbed these up with the new metal brake and shrinker/stretcher. I don't have a bead roller so I used a chisel and a small gap in my vise.

Both sides done!

I attempted to put the trunk pan and braces in solo but I need at least another set of hands. I will go get some klecko's and see if I can do it solo with those.

Everything is prepped but I can hold everything in alignment to make sure it all goes in the right spot so this will have to wait for another day.
