🔧 BUILD Pratt's 997.1 911 Turbo

General Information

I have been kicking around the idea of buying a 911 Turbo for years now. I love the 930, 964, and 993 are all out of my price range. Air cooled Porsche are pulling insane money right now. But the 996 (2001-2005) and 997.1 (2007-2008) were in my price range. Not like anything is wrong with them by any means. They started out with 415hp in 2001 up to 480hp in 2007. Plus they have AWD. And let's not forget the incredible torque they make.

After looking for a while I decided to hunt down a 997.1 for a few reasons. It still looks modern (especially the interior), it has an upgraded AWD system over the 996, has variable geometry turbos that spool quickly and make great torque just about anywhere, and it has round headlight. haha But a big reason to get a 2007-early 2009 was the 2010 cars had a different motor and were mostly dual clutch cars. The pre 2010 car used the famously reliable Mezger engine.

The car doesn't have a lot of options. But it has the two main ones I wanted. Locking diff and Sports Chrono package. It has heated seats, Porsche insignia in the headrests, sport steering wheel, and Bose stereo adds a nice touch in the interior. But more than anything it was the color I wanted. I didn't want a silver or black one. It seems those two colors make up like 90% of these cars.

Here are some pic for now. Mook said he would shank me if I didn't post up about the car. So after two days of lots of driving, I took a few pics. So it is a little dirty.

So a couple of weeks ago I finally had a chance to install some new parts on the car. First up was the tires. The car had Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires on it when I bought the car. They were halfway through their life I'd say. I also ran over a nail and had the rear tire patched. Between the noise the tires made, harsh ride, and not wanting to risk a patched tire, I figured I would just put new tires on the car. I went with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. The car rides a lot nicer and they are quieter for sure. I have thrown the car around a little but I know they are a pretty capable tire.*

After driving the car for a few days I installed the DSC shock controller. It took all of about 3 minutes to install. Backing out of my driveway and down the street, I could feel the suspension was more plush. Hitting cracks in the road or potholes the car no longer hit hard and made a "thud". I am surprised it is that much of a change. Bravo DSC. Hitting some of the same roads I had been driving the days before it was evident besides being more plush when just cruising around that it helped with brake dive, acceleration squat and lateral body roll when throwing the car around. The car stays flatter and the suspension feels compliant and stable. The shock "Sport" mode was the same as in normal mode but amped up some. The ride was about as harsh as the stock "normal" mode. But road imperfections you could feel more. But way less harsh than the stock "Sport" mode.*

The DSC shock controller was worth the money just for how nice the car rides and how settled the car seems. It comes with software where you can make your own custom program. I will eventually play with that. But with the stock suspension, I am sure the DSC program is dialed in very well

DSC tucked in its place under the dash.

The previous Saturday, the nice 68 degree day not the snow day, :haha: I installed the Numeric shifter. The install was pretty simple. It took me a couple hours. Half of that time was me taking the lower dash and the center console out. It was my first time taking the center console out. So I took my time as I didn't want to break anything. lol*

The shifter has an adjustable shifter lever. I can remove the shift boot and adjust the height of it with a blt and pin. There are three positions. The highest lever height is the stock shifter height. That is what my car had. The middle height is the factory Sprot shifter height. I drove a buddies car with that shifter. Then there is an even lower shifter lever height. I decided to start here. Why not? haha*

Due to the design of the shifter, you get a shorter throw without closing the side to side gate. So changing the throw longer or shorter doesn't change the whole feel of the shifter. I knew my shifter was slightly worn out. It has plastic bushings and what not. But wow. I now understand why people who describe this shifter as feeling like using a bolt action rifle. It is smooth while being precise. And the throw is SHORT! It takes more effort than stock due to the change of leverage in the lowest position. But if feels so rigid and strong I don't mind using the effort to shift. The shifter feel like it could take anything.**

Next up is the exhaust tips. Mine were pretty discolored and covered in soot that didn't want to come off easily. So I sand blasted them. I figured this might clean it up some. I was surprised they came out as silver as they did. But I like their finish. I'm thinking a tinted matte clear might darken them up and give them a unique look. I may take a red pad to them and hand snad them to see if a brushed look happens. Paint is ordered and that should be interesting.

Or if anyone else has any ideas? I want to keep them dark as there is nothing light colored on the exterior. Other than the wheels. Which might be changing too.

And last but definitely not least, the car had a paint correction and ceramic coating applied. The headlights were also polished slightly and the clear bra was worked over to remove the swirls and some imperfections. I have yet to see it in sunlight. But I'm sure it looks great. It definitely had a previous owner who used a car wash that wasn't touchless. haha

Thanks.

I actually ordered that product after I saw your post on the snake emblem for the intake. I had seen that product in the past but always wondered what the smoke clear looked like. I think it is really dependant on the base paint or color. I heard it is really thin and needs to be built up lite layer after lite layer.

I also ordered another brand smoke matte clear and high temp matt black. So I can try a few different things.

I am just trying to make these more presentable for now. I may switch to the GT2 style exhaust tips at some point. They come out at a 45 degree angle and are slash cut to be flat out the outlet. One option is in the pic below. Something a little more "euro" with out being some really weird looking tip. lol

I am a big fan of CQuartz. I have had it on 3 vehicles and it works great. But the buddy who does this for me is now using the System X products about a year now. So this has their Crystal product. Comparable to CQuartz UK. It the same price as the CQuartz but has a 3 year warranty. I told him I was ok with it as long as he stood by it. Including stripping it and replacing it with CQuatrz or better is there were any issues. haha

I have not seen it in the sun yet, but the car seems to really have a high gloss to it. I hope it's properties are as good as they say it is.

He wanted me to use their Profession or Diamond line coatings. But those are way too much money for 12 year old paint.

It has been a year and the only numbers we have seen so far are the dyno numbers . Mike needs to change the title to Pratt's dyno queen

:gtfoslap:

It's been winter. I've been busy. Leave me alone!

So the only option the car didn't have that I wanted was the power Adaptive Sport seats. These seats are full power, has stiffer foam, have back that supports your shoulders, and have adjustable bolsters.

A while back I found a set for sale out of a 12k mile, 2010 GT3. They have the optional Alcantara insets and fire extinguisher. I finally got the chance to install them Saturday. They also have the optional painted seat backs and trim. The car they came out of was silver. I don't mind the look but someday I may paint them, the console, and some other parts the color of my car. Or I may paint the other stuff silver. Since there is silver accents in the car already, I think it would work well even though it isn't what the factory does with painted interior parts.

These were out of a 997.2 car and I have a 997.1. Of course, no one could confirm if they would work or not. Put the passenger seat in and it worked. Wewhoo! Put the drivers' side in and no workie. D'oh! No power to the seats. Mine has a huge memory seat module that powers the seats. The 997.2 seats don't have that. So a buddy convinced me to take a shot of just adding power to the plug still being used. I took the wiring plug apart and stole power from the other plug. Bingo! Seats work perfectly.

I cleaned up the wiring and took some quick pics. The seats had been in a skid for over a month. There are some wrinkles from that. I'll steam the wrinkles out, clean them, and then use a protectant on the leather and Alcantara.

The old seats were comfortable in every way but one. The narrow backs sat right between my shoulder blades. It was really annoying. The sport seats don't have that issue. They definitely are more supportive and firm. But still comfortable. The support is great and with the adjustable upper and lower bolsters can really squeeze you in the seats. I am beyond happy with the seats. Plus they just look better. lol
