They are not sure what the issue is but admit it is their part. So to get it to work I had to file out the MAP sensor mounting hole so it would work. Then I discovered the mounting bolt only threads in 2.5 turns of a fine thread bolt. Really? lol

I will be using a Cobb Accessport. Basically a flash tuner. We will do some data logs on the street. Then some track tuning at Byron. I may rent a dyno to see where the numbers are at and tweak it further if needed. The factory ECU is pretty capable like more new cars are now. So plenty of data to make sure the car is doing what it should and be safe.
So who is actually doing the tuning?

Sam from By Design in California is the point person on the tuning. Sam is a very well known tuner for this platform. He works with Mitch from Cobb as Mitch is the developer for their Porsche stuff. Both guys have great communication I expect things to go pretty smooth. The couple local guys that I know that have used Sam and were extremely happy with him.

Well, I may have gone overboard some. haha

The basic tune and exhaust picks up a lot and most people go that route. Add injectors and run E85 for a really good time. Like 600/600 to the tire with a Cobb canned tune. But injectors are difficult to install in the car. And you will need a clutch as the stock one will not hold up to that torque. But a clutch install is not hard at all.

But I just can't seem to go the easy route or be normal. lmao

Meh, I have pretty basic stuff on my 6TT and make almost 500 to the tire. Filters on turbos, exhaust, intercoolers and a cobb pro tune. Pile should run mid to low 11s this fall in the high 120s. All that stuff was super easy labor wise too.

We have been working on the car when we have the time. So here is an update.

The trans inserts were installed. This fills the voids in the factory rubber bushings as well as replaces the factory pieces between the bushing and bracket (the parts you car see) as well. This is a street durometer insert as to keep the NVH down some.

I then installed the adjustable motor mounts. These have three different durometer bushings you can use. There is one on top and one on the bottom. These can be mixed and matched if you want. I went with the middle of the road durometer. The lowest durometer bushings are like 10% stiffer than stock. I went with the middle bushings and will see how these work out.

Here are the coolant pipes all welded up and ready to be installed.

We replaced every gasket, hose, and o-ring that didn't involve taking anything off the long block. And let me tell you, this motor uses A LOT of o-rings! I felt like all I did for 3 hours was to take parts that were off the motor and replace their o-rings. lmfao The picture below gives you an idea of the project. The massive pile on the right side is like 15 different style or o-rings. It is insane. But way nicer than scraping gaskets and resealing stuff with gaskets.

The hoses even have markings that you use to install them in the correct clocked position on the fitting. As well as any markings telling you where to place the hose brackets on the hose. I had never seen this done on this kind of scale. It sure makes things easier to assemble.

Here is a comparison of the stock intake crossover and the IPD unit. The stock throttle body is 74mm. I opted for the IPD unit that uses the 82mm GT3 throttle body. The stock crossover is a tube with a throttle body flange on it. The IPD has a nice splitter to direct the air flow. It also has the dimples on the floor and roof of the unit to help air flow. I believe the dimples cause the air to form a layer of turbulent air as a boundary layer. This allows less drag and lets air flow smoothly. Probably more to it than that but I am sure it is there for a reason. lol

The engine is finally back in the car. We have to hook everything back up, re-install the axles, shifter linkage, fluids, bleed systems, and so on. But it is nice to see the engine back in the car.

We had some issues. First off the re-built and upgraded turbos had a few broken studs in them. Really?! Of course, one had to be drilled out and needed to be re-tapped. The headers are nice but the factory hardware doesn't really work in some spots as the flange on the head of the bolts hits the cast header flange. Then the exhaust had a flange that was welded on the pipe clocked incorrectly. So we had to use a burr to oblong the holes on one of the flanges. Typical aftermarket install issues. ugh

We should be back on it tonight. With some luck, we might be able to fire it up in a couple of days. Fingers crossed all is good and I can start data logging the car and the tuner can tweak the tune.

Dude this is getting close! Looks awesome!

Seeing those new trans shims/inserts going in is exciting. Should tighten up the car and make the driver my experience better. I love little stuff like that!

Those bearing inserts are becoming more and more popular. Before you would have to install new poly bushings. When they are pressed in bushings that becomes a lot harder or more expensive. You can find these types of inserts for chassis mounts, suspension pieces, trans mounts, and so on. A great option for cars that are not track focused. Especially since many of them are offered in different durometer poly or even in hard polymers. It is great to have options and to be able to have the car set up the way you want/like it. Not the way someone else wants you to have it set up.

If their values keep climbing...

maybe. lmao But very doubtful.

I usually keep my cars for a while. The 2015 GT didn't last long due to the automatic just not doing it for me. Plus getting rid of it meant I got to upgrade.

So we got the car all back together and don't have any extra parts or bolts. Ya us! hahaha

The exhaust definitely needs to be addressed. We got it to work and it won't melt the bumper. But it is crooked on the car due to at least one 3 bolt flange being welded on clocked wrong. Sam and the manufacturer already have me a couple of options. So it will get handled here shortly. I think the quickest and easiest solution is to have my buddy Shaun chop, cut, weld as needed.

The intercooler is the last big part to put in the car. I like these pics as it shows the business end of the car for sure. Turbos, inlets, intercoolers, and so on. I have to get pics of the engine bay. It isn't fancy like a lot of cars. But the carbon fiber y-pipe dresses it up some.

Sam had me start with the canned Cobb Stage 3 tune for 1300 cc injectors. The car started well enough and came up to temp and idled for 10-12 minutes at the normal opperating temperature to burp the coolant system and make sure we had no leaks.

We got it off the lift and I went for a short drive. It was evident the tune was not set up for the bigger 82mm throttle body. It died twice when I came to a stop. It then would dip bad and hunt for idle for 2-3 seconds. But by the time I went around the block twice the ECU adapted and the car wouldn't die or hunt for idle much at all. So we decided to take it out and see what it did. If all went well, we would do two WOT runs for data logs for Sam.

Eric drove and I did the data logging and watched the vitals. Fuel pressure, a/f, fuel trims, etc. The car built boost quick and buried the 18 psi gauge. The air flow looked a little lean to me. Not surprising since the tune is set up for stock turbos and the ones on the car obviously more a lot more air. We made the second hit and it went about the same as the first one. With the new exhaust, the car sounds PISSED at WOT. That definitely adds to the experience.

Eric also has a 2007 911 Turbo that has all the bolt-ons my car has but with stock turbos. Sam says by the data logs on Eric's car and the experience he has dynoing these cars, he believes it makes about 630-640 to the wheels. That being said, Eric was shocked at how hard my car pulled. Especially on a canned tune not really meant for this car. Eric said it builds boost close to his car and pulls way harder up top. The stock turbos taper off boost as they build rpm. These upgraded turbos will not do that. So Eric saying that is a good sign that the car is making some good power.

I looked at some data logs I had and the ones from last night. The car has two Mass Air Flow sensors on it. Each one showed that with the stock tune the MAF was 376 g/s. The Cobb stage 1 tune with stock turbos was 446 g/s. The run last night was 545 g/s. So the current set up is about 45% more than the car stock. The airflow is definitely there. lol It showed a peak boost of 22.6 psi. It makes 20 psi or more from 4500 until the throttle closes. And this is the 93 octane tune. I have a feeling Sam may back the boost down some. But we will see what he says. But it sure seems the turbos are well worth the money. haha
