Bigger baits for Bigger fish!:toast: It's a power reel with 5.3:1 gear ratio and a large spool, it brings in 29.75" of line per full turn of the handle. So it brings the heavy rubber baits and big blade baits in with less work. My Shimano Curado's are @ 28" per turn so I want to get either a Shimano Tranx 400hg or the Abu Revo Rocket next, they bring in 40-42" line per turn. Leaning towards the Tranx but a buddy said he just bought the Rocket so I'll get to test his out in the real world before having to buy! Would use these turn bring in the smaller-medium musky baits in @ high rate of speed to trigger them into striking which works sometimes.

:eek3: Got dayum

My little Shimano with the small reel is "only" 6.3:1 (they make a high gear 7.2:1, but I wanted a little more finesse) but it ain't pulling now 30" per turn

I wanna take my daughter on a fishing trip this year. Dont know if she will like it, but I think it would be fun. I was also looking at your basic $50 walmart poles and some random fishing stuff Ive gotten from previous battlebox months.

Ugly Stick combo. Decent rods for dirt cheap. When I first started out, I was on Ugly Stick's because I was poor, and didn't want to invest too much into something I wasn't sure I was going to stick with. I've still got both of my original Ugly Sticks going strong. I've since upgraded to some higher quality rods and reels, but still break out my ultra light Ugly Stick for the bi-yearly trout release and my medium Ugly Stick serves duty as my backup rod, if my baitcaster is having a mood.

Shimano makes some cheap but quality reels too. I'm not sure they make the Sienna line anymore, but for their price point $30, you'd be hardpressed to find a better reel for under $50. Just my $.02

I own mostly cork. What I really like on my heavy rods is full cork vs the split grip. Have 2 rods with the spilt grip one St Croix and one Okuma and the full cork one's are so much more comfortable when your holding them against your rib's for hours at a time.

Agreed, do not like the split grip. All my rods are full cork grips.

Been really researching a “budget” medium heavy rod. Don’t want to throw a couple hundred on a rod, right now. So looking around the $70-90 range. Between the Shimano Clarus 7’ and the Daiwa Procyon7’. Both are an IM-7 blank, I believe. I can find the Daiwa cheaper than the Shimano. Never had a rod from either company, but I generally like Shimano reels. Right now I have 2 Ugly Stik’s (one ultra light and one medium light) and one off brand medium heavy that I got at a garage sale that’s held up well (it’s actually a fairly decent rod, Fuji guides and a Fuji seat) especially for only $5. Both my casting rods are 6’6” medium, one single piece St Croix and a 2 piece Fenwick.

I was eyeing the Convergence, was scared the IM-6's were a little to weak if I'm going after salmon/trout. Also, scared because I use almost exclusively braid, which is good to hear first hand experience.

I'll take a look back at the Convergence's. Thanks brosef :h5:

Ended up with a 7' 2-piece medium/heavy-fast Shimano Convergence Travel (apparently the "Travel" line are IM-7 blanks and aluminum oxide Fuji guides). Was hard to find the specific rod, but did end up finding it at a little NY fishing shop that has an online store.

Pairing it with a 4000 sized Shimano Sienna reel. Should be a perfect "budget" combo for salmon/trout.

Spring trout release a week from Saturday...gonna start getting my gear together, reorganized, oiling, and relining.

Oh there's a ton of places...we used to go to Axehead Lake, which is basically right off of 294, right by Rivers Casino. In the fall we went to Busse, but it's always SUPER packed (but so is axehead for that matter). I tried Banana lake, up near Wauconda this past fall, but there's only like a dozen spots to fish from, and guys just sit there all day. The rest of the lake is barely fishable shoreline because of super steep banks and is fairly heavily wooded. Busse only gets fall trout, but here's a list of all the April 7th sites.

I’ve got a 12.5’ Old Town Striper. It’s a sit on top, but I certainly wouldn’t stand in it...I know there are some standing yaks out there, but I’ve never been on one.

You can get some cheap sit on top Kayaks that are decent for dirt cheap. Costco has a 12’ Pelican fishing kayak for sale for $399

Got out after work today on the kayak. Rigged it up with some new stuff and it’s much more pleasant to fish off of. Caught somewhere around 15-20 largemouth. 4-5 were around 2-2.5#, one over 3# and the rest were dinks around 1lbs. Bonus rock bass in there too. Killing them on a wacky rigged senko, they were biting on a squarebill and chatterbait too. Tossing that worm in on top of a bed was just an absolute gimme.

I’ve been out a few times in some suburbs ponds and been skunked. Water is finally warming up since the weather break last week.

Seriously? Just like this?

How do you work the jig in the water? Weighted or?

I prefer these specific hooks.
Owner Wacky Hook

Weightless, sinks pretty slow. Using a Yum Dinger because they’re half the price of a senko. Drag it across the bottom slow until it grabs something, give it a couple small twitches to make it “swim” and let it fall to the bottom again. See the action of it in the video below. I fish wacky rigs or drop shot 80% of the time.

Annnd just dropped some dollars at tackle warehouse. I’ve got to get away from going to bass pro unless I need something last minute. So much cheaper. Ordered a bunch of roboworms, yum dingers, drop shot weights, wacky hooks, a couple rod socks and Erie darters.

I’m going to start fishing for some smallmouth on the lakefront soon.

Got my fox waterway sticker and 2018 fishing license yesterday, hooked up the ol' jon boat and launched at the state park. Didn't catch shit for the hour I was out. Mainly wanted to test the boat for leaks and that the engine still ran, but never a bad excuse to bring the fishing gear with.

Next is a trolling motor, I may swing over to Cabelas later and get one.
