🔧 BUILD LikeABauce302's 427 SBF Twin Turbo Build. 404 Error: LS Content Not Found

General Information

Since I've been on this site for awhile now, I figured its time to post up the project I've been working on. Some of you may recognize the car. The previous owner raced it quite a bit and ran it in the IMSM series.

Here is my 90 Mustang LX hatchback:

Chassis and Rearend:
-Welded full length subframe connectors
-Welded torque boxes
-Aluminum driveshaft and safety loop
-Custom 9" rear end
-Roll cage soon to be installed

Brakes:
-Maximum Motorsports manual conversion kit
-94 Cobra master cylinder

There are probably a few things I'm missing. I bought the car in December of 2009 and it's been a work in progress ever since. It was a solid well built car when I bought it, but it needed some work to make it street driveable.

I've still got some work to go. Before spring I'm going to freshen up the rear end and I'm planning on installing a Holley EFI system. If I have enough time and funds left over, I want to install a roll cage of some sort since I'm planning on running at the drag strip quite a bit.

nice runs man,me & Doug previous owner miss this car....dont beat yourself up
wish u the best
always next year...u did well & congrats....best its ever done

car has come s long way...the Chevelle whooped that car,Doug was surprised...

RIP Tommy, long story Matt,,,they were best friends

Thanks! It's a great car. It still has a lot of the same characteristics as it did when I bought it from Doug. The car's just been modernized and freshened up a bit with some safety equipment added. I'm having a blast with this car and hoping to get out a lot next year. I want to do some index racing and run it in NMRA true street again.

On the side, I'm slowly building a 427w for it that will have a pair of turbos. I'm slowly trying to make the car a little more street able, and faster at the same time. I really want to do hot rod drag week with this car one day.

Update time...since TCG loves fox body content lately lol.

I think some of my posts in here were lost during the forum transformation, but nothing exciting has changed since fall of 2018. I've made some little changes like added an anti-roll bar. Fixed some stuff like the power door locks, new weatherstripping, etc.

For the last 3 years, I've slowly been piecing a new powerplant together. Finally it's done and will be going into the car later this year.

Here are the details:

-Man-O-War 9.5" deck SBF
-4.125 bore x 4.00 stroke (427 cubic inches)
-Callie's Magnum crank
-Oliver Rods
-Wiseco 2618 forged pistons (9.4:1 compression ratio)
-TEA High Port 225 heads
-Edelbrock Super Victor EFI intake
-Lil John Motorsports custom hydraulic roller cam
-Morel hydraulic lifters
-Jesel Pro Series shaft rockers
-Rollmaster Gold billet timing set
-Innovator's West flying magnet balancer

The plan is to feed this thing with a pair of 66/73 turbos.

I have no idea idea what a man o war deck is but I love the sound of it. Proceed.

Full blown aftermarket block. Think Dart Little M. 9.5 deck means 351W style block not a short deck 5.0L I believe. Based on the setup I bet it's probably 1100 to the tire conservatively and may be as high as 1400 depending on how things wring out.

^ This. It's a 351w based block. The 351w has a 9.5" tall deck compared to a 302's 8.2" deck height. The deck height is measured from the crankshaft centerline to the deck.

The Man O War block is just a less popular aftermarket block, made by Bill Mitchell Products (formerly World Products). It's comparable in strength to a Dart Iron Eagle, but was a few hundred dollars cheaper. My machinest had no complaints about the block other than he said it required a little more de-burring than a Dart. Otherwise everything went together really nicely.

Here is a look at the bottom end. I chose this block because it had 4 bolts on all 5 main caps, at a price similar to a Dart SHP, which only has 4 bolts on the inner 3 main caps. This block is a heavy beast. It's probably way overkill for my application, but I tend to overbuild things. I'm shooting for 1,100-1,200ish horsepower.

I can't wait to get this engine in the car. It should make it more street driveable too. Right now I have a stock block 308 with 11.7:1 compression. Putting race gas in the car sucks. I'm excited to be able to cruise around on 93. Big cubes, with small quick spooling twins are going to make for a fun street car.

That's the way to go for sure, fun street car for cruising! Let me know when you are out so I can keep the Hellcat safe inside.

Is this going to be a carbed or fuel injected setup?

It will be fuel injected. I'm running Holley EFI in the car now. I put a Holley system in the car a few years ago to get familiar with it before I put the expensive engine in it.

Right now I have the Holley HP ECU. I may upgrade it to a Dominator later down the road.

Brought the new engine home last night. Huge thank you to my friend Brandon at Geared Up Motorsports for helping me get this thing machined and assembled. It turned out beautiful.

The next piece of the puzzle also arrived. My Stainless Works down and forward headers showed up on Thursday. In the next couple days, I'll get the engine on my stand and headers bolted on so I can figure out oil filter clearance and turbo drain line locations.

I'm anxious to hear it fire up, but I'm not putting it into the car until late fall. Right now the car currently has a good running engine in it, so I want to finish the season before tearing it apart.

I still have to buy a fuel system, turbos, wastegates, and an intercooler. I may send my transmission back to Freddy Brown for some upgrades and to have an SFI bell housing installed.

I'm expecting 1,100 - 1,300 rwhp out of this engine on a race tune.

Figured I'll put up my track day vids and progress in this thread to keep it all in one spot.

I had the car out on Tuesday, September 15th for the CMC track day. The car was super consistent and ran 11.01-11.06 pass after pass, with a consistent 1.52 60 foot. I got greedy and decided to switch from my 100 shot jets to the 150 jets. It blew through the torque converter and the car was on the rev limiter by the 1,000 foot cone. I put the 100 shot jets back in and it went right back to consistent 11.0 passes.

With the TCG track day coming up, I was determined to squeeze a 10 second pass out of the car. Especially knowing that this engine is probably coming out over the winter, I really wanted a 10 second pass out of this stock block 308. I made a few minor changes in hopes to just see a 10.9x.

Here is what I did:
-Replaced 7 year old M/T ET Street Radials with a fresh pair of M/T ET Street R Radials (275/50r15)
-Replaced trans fluid with John Deere HyGard to tighten the torque converter a little
-Added 1.5 degrees of total timing
-Leaned out the fuel map slightly. After watching videos of the CMC track day, I was puffing some healthy black smoke all the way down the track.
-Removed the air filter

Adjusting the fuel and timing maps in Holley EFI a few nights before the TCG track day:
PXL_20201006_235124015.jpg

Installed this ricer clamp on velocity stack on the end of my homemade intake tube in place of the air filter.

PXL_20201004_200804311.jpg

Fresh rubber installed

PXL_20200924_203311143.jpg

And the videos...my first pass of the day was 10.82 @ 124.65 with a 1.49 60 foot.

And the in car video. I knew as soon as I let go of the button that this was a 10 second pass. It felt faster than. The last time out.

My first 10 second time slip
PXL_20201009_171459793.jpg

Pass #2, I went a little faster and ran 10.779 @ 124.32 with my best 60 foot of 1.473.

And here is another pass with video from the outside and inside the car. This was a 10.781 @ 124.65 with a 1.487 60 foot.

I ended up finishing the day with a best of 10.775 @ 124.70. The car was very consistent and very fast off the line all day. For only putting down ~430 rwhp the last time it was on a dyno, this car really moves out.

I'm very happy with how the car performed. I've had so much fun running the car these last couple track days, I almost don't want to change the setup lol. I'm sure I'll forget all about it though when the bigger engine is between the fenders. Speaking of that, I just ordered turbos today ?:). I'll keep this thread updated over the winter.
