🔧 BUILD LikeABauce302's 427 SBF Twin Turbo Build. 404 Error: LS Content Not Found

General Information

Since I've been on this site for awhile now, I figured its time to post up the project I've been working on. Some of you may recognize the car. The previous owner raced it quite a bit and ran it in the IMSM series.

Here is my 90 Mustang LX hatchback:

Mod list:

There are probably a few things I'm missing. I bought the car in December of 2009 and it's been a work in progress ever since. It was a solid well built car when I bought it, but it needed some work to make it street driveable.

I've still got some work to go. Before spring I'm going to freshen up the rear end and I'm planning on installing a Holley EFI system. If I have enough time and funds left over, I want to install a roll cage of some sort since I'm planning on running at the drag strip quite a bit.

Well I think I finally got the car to a point where I'm pretty happy with it and can enjoy it for awhile.

A couple weekends ago I installed new valve covers, a breather tank, and finished some small details under the hood.

Then, early last week, I had the car out at a local shop for some dyno tuning. With the car now properly tuned, I was ready for my first test runs down the drag strip. I took the car out to Byron last Sunday and was able to get some runs in before the rain started. This was the first time this car has been down a drag strip since 2010, so needless to say, I was just happy to be there and not so concerned about my time slips.

Pic from when I was fitting the 28x10.5 slicks. I had to roll the fenders a little bit, but otherwise they fit perfectly.

Overall I'm happy with how the car ran my first time out. I was having some trouble getting off the line, but otherwise the car pulled hard and went straight. Before my next outing, I'm going to make some tune adjustments which should help the car leave a lot harder.

Well this showed up today.

It's a Man O War 9.5 deck with 4.120 unfinished bores. It will eventually be a 427w with a power adder when it's complete. I'm still undecided on if it will be a nitrous engine or turbocharged. Whatever I do, it's going to remain street driveable.

I'm anxious to get started, but I know it's going to take awhile. My next purchase in a few weeks will probably be a crankshaft. The car runs now, so I fully plan to run it as is and enjoy it while I slowly build this engine on the side.

At first glance, I'm really impressed with this block for the price. The Man O War with nodular main caps is roughly the same price point as the FRPP Boss or Dart SHP. This block has 4 bolts on all 5 mains, where those other blocks only have 4 bolts on the inner three mains. From the research I've done, it should be on par with a Dart Iron Eagle as far as strength goes.

We'll see how much machine work it takes to get it ready for assembly though. It looks good to me, but I'm no machinest lol.

Yup. The idea is to go to a larger displacement engine that I can hopefully make more streetable than my current engine, and also more powerful.

The goal is to be able to run pump gas on a street tune. My current engine is at 11.7:1 compression and doesn't like fuel less than 100 octane. It's inconvenient and therefore doesn't get driven much.

You could still run a power adder, the cubes don't effect that but going 454-460ci is definitely more time in making sure the clearance on the block has the room for the rotating assembly to fit and there are less options crank wise vs. the more common/proven 9.5 deck combos like 427,434,438. If it were me I'd go with 434ci. What size heads are you thinking of going with?

I've been looking at 434 combos also. There are tons of options for 427 rotating assemblies. Plus if I end up having to bore the block at some point, it leaves me plenty of room to go bigger later on if I have a mishap requiring rebuild.

For heads, I'm leaning towards TEA High Port 225s and more than likely a solid roller cam of some sort. I need to do some research to see who I'll have do the custom grind cam.

I'm trying not to go overboard and keep it to a somewhat reasonable budget. I'm only trying to make 900-1000 rwhp which is pretty easy with a 400+ cubic inches.

It's been awhile since I've posted anything about my cars here. I saw in one of the other threads that people would like to see more car content, so here's a thread bump.

This past season I struggled to get the car to 60'. The torque converter was too tight and killing performance. Best pass this season was 11.40 @ 121 with an embarrassing 1.8x 60'. I sent the torque converter out for re-stall and should have it back shortly.

My goal for next season is to get into the high 10s, then dial the car back a little bit and try to tune for consistent 11.00 and run it in NMRA True Street in Joliet.

Meanwhile, I'm making slow, but steady progress on my 427w build, buying things as I can afford to. So far I've ordered a Lunati Signature Series 4" stroke cranke, and Oliver billet 6.200" rods. In a few weeks I'll be looking to order pistons. I think I've finally made my decision to go with twin S366s. The nitrous shortage this past season was frustrating enough to sway me towards turbos.

To me 400+ cid is the magic number to break into the 8s with turbos. Should be fast as fuck.

That's what I'm shooting for. I would love to be in the mid to high 8s and still be street driveable. My end goal is to have a car that can compete in true street events and hot rod drag week. I'm not a serious enough racer to do any major heads up racing and don't have the budget or interest to get into grudge racing.

Just realized I haven't updated this thread in a long time.

I didn't do anything exciting to the car this year. I fixed a few things I didn't like and made some small changes. In the spring, I upgraded the fuel pump and pump basket because my fuel pressure was dropping too much for comfort when the nitrous hit. I also replaced my nylon braided trans cooler lines with PTFE lines so I never have to worry about them.

The most recent thing I did was overhaul the cooling system a few weeks ago. I bought a new 2 row Griffin radiator, dual Contour fan, and C6 Corvette fan module, so I can have variable fan speed controlled by a single PWM output from the Holley EFI system.

After a disappointing summer of not racing or doing any car stuff really, I finally got the car out to GLD last weekend for some test passes.

I only got to make 2 passes, but I was very happy with how the car performed. It was my first time out after having the torque converter re-stalled, so I had no idea what it would do. On my first pass, I sprayed out of the hole and pulled my best 60' so far. I ran a new best of 11.043 @ 121.37 with a 1.520 60'. My second pass was nearly identical and ran 11.09 @ 121 with a 1.524 60'. Not bad for a stock block 308 on a 100 shot.
