Did he burn through on a car?

Ive always wondered about doing this stuff myself, but was always worried about it. Seems like as long as youre using an orbital and dont go crazy you should be good though. :dunno:
That’s exactly why I posted this. I worried for years about the amount of clear I was removing, and apparently I was worrying for no reason. It’s my understanding that an mf pad and compound probably takes 100x more clear off than a polishing pad and polish. In other words, it may be impossible to burn through paint with basic polish and a random orbital.

I don’t think he used an orbital.

you might be using the wrong term here

this is an "orbital" buffer:

Hmm, very interesting. Ive always thought its almost impossible to burn thru paint with a DA. But fuck, 7 section passes to get it perfect is a lot imo.

I learned 25 years ago on a high speed rotary with wool pads and never burned thru paint either. Maybe factory paint was a lot better then, because I hear horror stories now a days with rotary's. I'm contemplating going back to a rotary, even though I havent used one on probably 18 years or so.

in case there are more people than just I that are not entirely sure of the pattern of how they all work.

I was eyeing the Torq one from Chemical Guys last Blck Friday because they were on sale along with a bunch of their stuff on Amazon, but was worried Id destroy something so I didnt buy it....
I think I recall in one of the detailing thread that the CG one was kinda junky. Gav recommended the Porter Cable that KJ listed earlier, the 7424 I think?

I have the DeWALT cordless one, which is I think is DA, would have to check. They just list it as a random orbital.

Edit: Cause I forgot greasy greasy would see the thread.... Got the DeWALT based on his, Yaj Yak Yaj Yak, and Gav'sPurpleZ Gav'sPurpleZ recommendation.

greasy greasy, I'm loving my DeWALT stuffs!

One thing to remember is that the amount of paint ( base and clear ) is getting thinner on today's vehicles.

Some manufacturers are delivering cars with sub 4 mil "coating" measurements. This is primer, base and clear combined. Which means there's about 1.5 mils of clear.
These gauges usually show microns and mils, there are roughly 25 microns in 1 mil.

I have the Torq one. I'm a super amateur and use it once a year at most....and it works well for my purposes.
