Default How fast your toon go?

So I was asking people on the chain this past weekend how fast their pontoon went.

28ish Bennington with twin 250 Yamahas - 52 mph
27ish Crest? with twin 300 Evinrude - 70 mph
26ish Bennington with 350 Yamaha - 51 mph
26ish Manitou with 300 Evinrude - 49mph

So I feel like the 70mph guy was just stroking his dick with his boat load of people. 70mph is FLYING. But I also feel like the others should have a bit more? Maybe the boats had a load of people on them at those speeds or had the canopy up? They were all pretty similar. All of the boats sampled were tritoons.

discuss race toons

I think most people donít take the time to set it up right, 50 is hauling the mail for a toon so people donít try other props, most of the motors are set up very deep they would need a jack plate to see max performance out of it, id you search around on forums there are guys going in the 60ís with 250hp set up right depends on the toon design also, I saw a toon hit low 70ís with a single 400 at the shootout a couple years back

You think they have limiters?

My dads 22 Bennington with a 175 Yamaha does 45 on GPS with just me in it on calm water. 17 pitch stainless 4-Blade. I forgot the exact WOT RPM but looks like 5-10% slip.

70 mph on a pontoon boat... WTF, how you hold your drinks and burger at that speed?

The motors have rpm limiters, you can feel it when it hits the limiter, all the motors have a wot operating range say 5000 to 5500 where you prop that to land makes a big difference

weight slows down pontoons a fuck ton.

like those boats are crazy heavy for a pooontoon.

the fiberglass side pontoons are especially heavy.

i also 100% doubt 70 mph

I've gotten the old man's Bennington R25 up to high 30's...maybe 40. 25 foot toon with a Yamaha 175 out back.

I know there heavy but I think with 600hp 70mph is believable

Different set up but with 3 300’s they got 114mph in the shootout, pretty sure it was a southbay and that’s what most of the really fast ones are that I’ve seen, maybe they have toons that are light years ahead of all the other brands

The guy with the shootout boat had it listed for sale a few weeks or so back. $60k with 2 300's iirc. It was still rigged for 3. Not sure if it sold or not.
He also had an older model with 2-250 Promax's on it that was for sale a couple months ago, low $50's - he said it ran 72 iirc...had a lot of the same stuff done as the shootout boat - jackplates, coated toons, etc...

if it was a cat or something, sure but the twin poontoons just don't run as well as you'd think.

i've yet to see a twin engine test with an impressive number really.

manitou with twin new 400r's hit 71 mph...

What does all this mean for the tritoonís speed? Well, with an average horsepower of about 165, our boats reach speeds of around 35 to 40 mph on average. And our 27 X-Plode XT SHP, a new length for 2018, recently reached 71 mph when equipped with two Mercury Racing 400R engines.

the most interesting setup to me are the eliptical twin pontoon benningtons and similar...

without the center toon, they seem to run quite a bit better than comparable tritoons...

48.2 mph out of a 200 on a twin ellipitical boat (no center)

42.3 out of a 150 on a twin elliptical

Twin 300ís on a similar size cat will run well over 100, I figured the crest was a tri toon I didnít think a pontoon would handle the weight of a pair of 300ís, I could see it being slower without the center toon

the crest is a tritoon

the larger center toons seem to slow down pontoons honestly.

they ride better and bank into turns but are slower.

my dad's pontoon runs similar top speeds to @PANDA's and @Eagles with a 225 same length, but larger center toon.

70 seems like bullshit. In the research I have done the Suncatcher I have been looking at is a 22' tri-toon. You can option up to a 250 V-max but anything over a 200 will get the boat to 40. Suncatcher welds fins to the outside toons so it doesn't pitch when turning, maybe that also helps with top speed.

Does it have lifting strakes? It should lift more and have less drag if done right if itís just three round toons then yeah itís not going to help a lot, my dads crest had them but it was an option he requested

lifting strakes seem to be standard across most major manufacturers for engine sizes above 200hp.

doesn't pitch while turning? like roll?

if anything rolling into turns is a good thing

the biggest thing about bigger hp engines once you get above 200/225 or so is how much acceleration they pickup since top speed seems to have diminishing returns

overall, i really think the balance comes from balancing weight/drag and engine size...

like i posted there, that 150 powered boat is running 42... with that math, 300-350hp powered boats should be running 60+ but they aren't...

but that 150 powered boat is only 2500 lbs and barely has any running surface.

not having a center toon i bet allows the pontoon to act as a cat and pack some air unlike the large tritoon boats that has that space occupied by a toon.
