🔧 BUILD Taws697's 1963 Biscayne Build! the anti-swap. Engine updates on page 5

General Information

After reading the thread on user participation, I decided to start a build thread. I got the car back in 2018 but never made a thread because 1, it’s not a turbo LS or blown coyote and 2, because I move so slowly on it. I may fail miserably, but here we go.......

1963 Chevy Biscayne 2dr post. Laurel green with a fawn interior. Straight 6 with a 3 on the tree. 40,000 mile car completely untouched with plastic covers on the seats. This thing is bare bones. It has 1 option which is a push button radio, nothing else. No side mirrors, single speed wipers, no reverse lights, manual steering and brakes. The original owner down in Kentucky passed and his buddy sold it to me out of the estate. I got the original owners manual, accessory book, dealer ice scraper and even the statement of origin. These are pictures of when I picked it up.

So, it’s been somewhat frustrating because I haven’t been able to find much garage time. I did manage to disassemble the rear suspension and remove the rear axle. I’d like to press the bushings out of the control arms and send them out for powdercoat along with all of the bumper brackets.

The drivers rear body mount needs replacement as well. It’s common for them to rot out due to a poor design. There’s an hole in it for the filler neck and the rear tire slings stuff up there. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can work on that and begin cleaning/painting the underside of the car.

I started tearing into the crusty body mount. It’s way more involved than I expected. Multiple pieces of sheet metal are tucked into each other and spot-welded together. I pulled out the cover plate first, then removed the box mount. The trunk sheetmetal that provides support for all of this was real thin. So, I cut a section of it out.

I made a replacement patch panel out of 16gauge steel. It required a bend that had a long radius on it, so I cut a slot in a piece of 3/8” black pipe and stuck it on my bench vise sheetmetal brake.

I welded that piece in place. Hopefully in the next few days I can weld the box mount and cover to this new piece.
