🔧 BUILD NOMIEZVR4's Eventual MKIV Supra build

General Information

Picked up this car on Dec 14, 2020...WOW its already been over a year! I cant believe it. Its a 94 Targa original auto twin turbo. R-Title from previous owner. I've been so busy with life and other things(cars) I don't even have a list where I have all the details about this car in 1 place. Now this thread will be it.

So as mentioned 94 MKIV
Original TT
Automatic with 4k Stall converter
103XXX miles on the chassis
Black Interior
Car was repainted Viper Red prior to my ownership originally was renaissance red

The Good
Standalone ECU- aem v1
No name single turbo. Unsure of exhaust manifold, guessing PHR Torque? Its a log style
FMIC
HKS SSQV
Intake filter
Greddy EBC
FIC 780cc Injectors with aftermarket fuel rail
3" turboback exhaust- unsure of brand
Tien Coilovers
Sound system
Boost/Volt gauges
Wbo2 gauge
20" Enkei wheels
I think those are the major mechanical modifications. Not sure if OEM fuel pump or aftermarket. Tuned to just over 400whp

The car runs decent, tuned on 93 starts up every time and runs consistently for the most part with no major hiccups in driveability. Cosmetically its got a TRD style hood and rear spoiler, Bomex skirts and I believe a knock-off Ridox front bumper. Also has updated tail lamps I believe and chromed version headlamps. The front/rear spats came with the car, I have not put them on yet and I probably wont till I address the cosmetics.

The Bad
The auto trans is moody. Until and unless it doesn't get warmed up while idling for a good 10-15 minutes prior to driving, it doesn't like shifting out of 1st. I've checked trans fluid levels and it looks clean and is leveled. Sometimes on cold starts it shoots out a small puff of blue smoke. Its got some minor fluid leaks.

The Plan
I'm a simple guy, I didn't have grand plans for this car. I like to buy cars to drive them, IDGAF about buying cars and storing them for value. Life is too short for that. With that being said, Originally I wanted to have an OEM motor, 550-600whp single turbo manual supra. Emphasis was on having the best soundtrack the 2jz has to offer. The car would be a fair weather summer street car, focused on top down spirited driving. No drag racing goals, no autocross aspirations. Since this car is a R-Title and I'm trying to keep it budget friendly, I decided on a cd009 setup. I got a quote from Grannas for his t56 swap kit and it was close to 10k and it wasn't the top of the line spec'd out setup either. Disclaimer, Grannas products are amazing, i just didn't want to spend the coin. So I settled for a cd009 which is essentially a 350z 6 speed manual transmission.

Since the trans is the most painful part of the car currently, I found a deal for a cd009 and purchased the following:

-2005 G35 revised trans
-CBF cd009 shifter
-Colins 2jz to cd009 adapter plate
-A340 auto Flexplate with spacer
-Arp flywheel bolts
-Colins Stage 5 twin disk clutch 850tq
-TOB, 350z clutch fork, pivot ball, slave cylinder

That settles the drivetrain aspect of the car for the time being.

Regarding the soundtrack and power setup, Ideally I wanted a RPS manifold and Borg Warner turbo. The RPS turbo manifold has long been discontinued. So whatever is available, is used and typically has lots of miles on it and may have been repaired previously due to cracks and other wear and tear. Plus they had this issue of boost creep. And since supra tax is a real thing, they are very expensive now too. All those factors combined made my decision a little easier and I decided I would look for something else that will still sound good but without all the other baggage. After doing lots of research, i finalized my options down to 2 choices: Sp f1 and future fab. After watching videos and looking at prices, (both were going to be built on order) I decided on the future fab, it was this video that swayed my decision in the end, but both the FF and spf1 sound incredible.

Fortunately the Borg Warner Turbo's are still available so I went ahead an purchased it. s366 original cast wheel, t4 divided hotside and v-band outlet. More on this later. For the time being, this thread will focus on the auto to manual swap then the turbo swap followed by the cosmetics. To start things off I'll post some pictures prior to my purchase that the previous owner shared with me along with some pics under my ownership. Thanks and enjoy!

I started on it last night and was able to finish this morning. Having a lift is a huge help, couldn't have done it so quickly without it. Fortunately everything went smooth, absolutely no issues and I was able to drive it off without any further clutch adjustment needed. First impressions...the clutch feels so buttery smooth. Pedal feel is even lighter, I thought being a cerametallic single disc it would be a bit stiffer but its ultra light. Engagement is super easy, so easy my wife could drive it. I'm very happy with it.

The shifter is awesome. Feels so good to shift!! no slop, non whatsoever and shifts are click-click from gear to gear, throws are short and precise. Effort with the heavy weighted knob is just perfect. In summary, im really happy with the setup now. Looking forward to putting lots of miles on it, for now ill have to start with a few hundred mile break-in. Weather hasn't been too bad so I'm hoping I could get some miles on it.

I'll get some more pictures of the shifter. New shifter base mounted

Next will be steering rack bushings, an alignment and then im really getting close to being done with it.

No major update here, cause no major work is needed. Just been driving and enjoying the car since the new clutch. I did want to get the cosmetics squared away a bit more. The rear end always looked flat and empty. The front bumper is a ridox style, bomex skirts and OEM in the rear. It always looked incomplete. So i purchased some ridox style spats for the rear and sent the car to the bodyshop.

And here is a picture for reference so you can see what im talking about. From certain angles it doesn't look terrible, but it always bugged me.

We really didn't have to do the whole qtr panel, but i had a little scratch so had them do it while we were in there. Here is the finished product. Its a subtle difference, but perfect for me.

Final item for cosmetics is to tint the headlights and front turns. Just gonna put a light shade of black so they aren't so chromy. Otherwise, im happy.

Also, im really tempted to put a front plate on the car. I know, blasphemy, but all my cars have front vanity plates. I want this to match. How bad does this look? It doesn't look bad to me, but i think im being biased heavily. In my defense, the FMIC is highly undersized for the bumper, so this helps a bit. This is a MOCK UP only, i wont have that carbon trim on it or silver screws.

This garage shot wins TCG.

Also I wouldnt be mad about the front plates. Tho I think the supra one would need to be positioned a touch lower and angled back more like the Nismo one. Then its money

Rear spats look good!

I normally would never say this.. but I like the “supra” and “nismo” front plates. Reminds me of old school video game or something.

Any way you can fab up a bracket to mount the front license plate on the supra without drilling holes?
Yes! Someone agrees with me! Unfortunately I don't know of any way other than to put holes into it. If I do it, it's gonna be permanent

sunday funday...got me some new steering rack bushings
1687742264399.png

Got the car racked up and ready for disassembly

New bushings
1687742322454.png

I knew the old ones were crusty and after removing the bolt in front, my suspicions were confirmed. probably original OEM bushing

After not too much of a struggle, the new bushings are in.

Post impressions: I definitely did feel a difference with the new rack bushings. Steering feels a bit more cushioned and connected. I stiffened up my coilovers a bit, i drive with the targa off 99% of the time, and the chassis is really 'noodly' feeling...im going to try to do the alignment tomorrow and see if that helps any. Steering is slightly off center. Eventually if it still is really flexy, i may get some floor support bars and see how much they will help, theyre supposed to help a lot. We'll see.

Got another item off the list, pretty close to the end now. Wasn't a huge fan of the original Tein Street Advance coilover setup on the car, it felt felt great over bumps. Ended up getting a deal on some fairly new HKS Hipermax S takeoff's from a guy who went to air ride, got these delivered yesterday and didn't waste any time. These typicall retail for 1600 and some change.

Typically id use the lift but I didn't feel like waiting around and got to work on the ground. Surprisingly, it was a real easy swap all around. Took about 2.5hrs to get all 4 installed and nothing fought me along the way.

Old setup removed, will fit 2jz and Lexus SC chassis if anyone's interested.

Took another hour or so to get the ride height dialed back to how it was before. It was too low initially

Driving impressions:
So chassis flex is still a thing. It's not to be confused with the suspension. With that being said, the car feels much more composed going over bumps, has a more OEM like feel. Ride is super compliant considering it's on coils, however it's not tight. I kept the settings right towards the middle of adjustment range. Will need more seat time but I'm happy I got these, will report back after going over famous crappy roads then I'll know for sure how much better, thanks for tuning in.

considering selling this thing...mid 50's will take it. Obviously this isn't the best place to list it, just wondering would anyone be curious in this thing? There are lenders who would assist with a loan for a car of this age if people are interested. Light stream, JJ best and collector car lending
