There's a long list of reasons that make sense out here....but yes, coming from the midwest...at first it's very strange.
When you realize they're everywhere....it just becomes normal.
Like turquoise jewelery, giant ass belt buckles and lifted trucks....all things that are normal in AZ.

Landscaping for the majority of people out here is rocks and hearty plants.
Basically like what you see in the picture.
A few folks have real grass, but mostly it's turf.
As far as my plan, there will be a large turf dog run on the side with the AC on it.
Paver pathway from front, through the gate and along the side of the house. That will bend around and connect to the paver pathway that will extend from the patio.
That will lead to a 14 x 14 paver square that a pergola is going on.
For now, the remaining areas will be filled in with 1" of rock until I figure out where I want to drop the hot tub and how I want to landscape the rest.
This was phase 1 to give the dog a place to run and not have dirt being tracked all over the house.
