Default Nitrous and misc questions

I just ordered a zex nitrous kit for my 2004 mustang gt and will be running a 100 shot when it gets installed. The plan is to install it with a buddy of mine one day in the up coming weeks when we've got time. I'm curious how hard it is to install and if there's any advice that I may need to know. My current mods are: cold air intake, 70mm throttle body, upper plenum, under drive pullies, o/r h pipe, cat back, and a 93 octane tune from bama. I've also got the car lowered on FRPP springs. Does anyone have an idea what I'd run at the track? For tires ive got nitto 555zr on the back; 285/40/17. Thanks for any input in advance

Plate or nozzle? Its really cake to install if you're not afraid of wiring. Mounting the bottle can be a pain in the ass sometimes though.

You should be mid-high 12s if you can hook it.

I havent taken the car to the drag strip since buying it.

And I decided against a boosted set up due the fact that I don't have any intentions of racing the car regularly. Nitrous seems to be the cheapest easiest way to get the power gains I want without spending a lot of money.

You'll be spending money every time you want to fill the bottle. Pay for a turbo setup and you have power all the time. I wouldn't run nitrous on a car unless I was planning on drag racing it all the time.

C.Evans has me thinking now and if I can only run a 12.7 then maybe saving more and returning the nitrous kit will be the way to go. Id like to hit the mid 12s with this car. Plus my fiancÚ isn't too thrilled I spent money on my car since we're saving for a wedding and house :/ Ah decisions, decisions...

Nitrous is the only way to go fast fir cheap. Saying a turbo is better because you have to keep refilling the bottle is weak. The nitrous kit is $5000 less than a turbo kit. At $50 a bottle that's 100 bottles you'd have tobuy go through. That's close to 1000 passes. That's just not going to happen. Even if it did it beats the cost because its not that much up front.

Do the nitrous. My only problem with the ZEX kit is they give you a fuel line T instead of tapping of the rail like the NX kit.

And that was my thoughts originally too. I sat down and looked at turbo kits and blowers then saw the price of nitrous and figured is have to spray the car way more than i plan to in order to spend $5,000. Thanks for the advice.

There is such a HUGE difference in startup price between a nitrous system and a properly done turbo system that they aren't even in the same ballpark. It would take one HELL of allot of bottle fills to equalize the price. A single nozzle nitrous system will top out around $1,000-$1,500 with all the bells and whistles while the other usually starts in the middle $5-6k range for a system of respectable quality using good parts. Install labor for the nitrous will also be about 1/4 - 1/8th the time compared to the turbo system so you are saving there too. We are talking over 100-125 bottle fills at $40 per bottle. Most people will NEVER put that many bottles through their car so in many cases nitrous comes out to be a considerably better choice when talking about price alone. Now when it comes to simplicity nitrous is WAAAAAAAAY less complex than a turbo system. Mount a few items, pull a few wires, jet the nozzle, drop a few degrees of spark advance in the tune, verify WOT AFR's, rejet if necessary. Small shots of nitrous in the 75-150 range are a cake walk.

I have a friend who has an orange 04 GT that had similar mods plus VT Stage II cams that went 11.6x's on slicks on his shakedown passes at around 500' DA. He was only running either a 100 or 125 shot at that time. Later we built everything, swapped to built T56, etc, and I did a custom dual rail quad solenoid direct port setup so he could spray a much larger shot on his Vic Jr single plane intake. Regardless of the mods we ended up doing in the future, the point is that if you set your combo up properly even on a smaller shot your car can be capable of quicker ET's than just 12's.

Don't let some of these guys talk you out of staying with nitrous in your car man. It is a totally fine way to add power, is one hell of allot cheaper in the short and long run, and considerably easier to setup and tune for. I would have advised against going with Zex but since they are sort of the AOL of nitrous but since you already have bought the system you can make it work and it should do you just fine for a beginner kit. Just make sure that you control it with a minimum of a WOT throttle position sensor switch which is standard on the Zex systems and a RPM window switch too, which usually doesn't come with the Zex systems.

I had a 97 Mustang GT that I put ported PI heads, Comp 272 cams, LT headers, BBC 78mm intake elbow/throttle body, 4.10 gears, 315/35/17 Drag radials and most importantly, a NOS NOSZLE system with WOT switch and RPM window switch. I never took it to the track, but I am sure it was a low 12 second car easily. PLus, at $37/refill, it was not too expensive. I sold it to buy my house and I see that it has ended up for sale at morgan motors in Lombard (MORGAN MOTORS | Auto dealership in LOMBARD, Illinois | Home page). I miss it.

But it was FUUUUN as hell!

With those mods I would bet your GT was faster than low 12's assuming the driver mod. I can only assume you weren't spraying anything less than a 150 on that NOSzle bolt-on direct port system let alone the gains from the compression bump you received dropping PI heads onto a non-PI shortblock.

It may have been. Unfortunately, I never fot it to the track after all the mods . I wish I did.

2 valves in stock form prefer boost over spray, buddy had one(2 valve) one with heads, cams, full exhaust, tire, 4.30 gear and tune and think hit 12.7~12.8x @ 116 in quarter, my 2 valve with kenne bell 2.1on 11 psi made 450 whp/ 470wtq best run on 18s with a 2.2 sixty was 12.2 @ 124 with full exhaust, 3.73 and kurgan tune. Everything else stock minus kenne bell kit.
