kind of in a bind.. nasty noise coming from rear bank.

replaced alternator, changed oil, and did a wheel bearing today. started it up, this noise still all existed..

a few friends think collapsed lifter, but it's a roller lifter so i'm kinda unsure on that.

removed belt and ran it to be sure.. noise still went on.. used a long prybar as a ghetto stethoscope and traced noise to somewhere on the rear bank. I put the prybar between the head and block as well and it got louder..

made a little noise before, but nothing like that.. oil looked great. looked like typical, 5k oil. no metal.

Did you fill the oil to max level? Sometimes a lower amount of oil will make the motor noisier than usual.

that's how it sounded about a month ago. noise was coming from what I thought was the alternator, so I replaced that today. The alternator is dead silent now and this noise in the original post is very very.. well, loud as fuck.

The oil was filled to MAX

How does the underhood smell? could it be an exhaust manifold leaking? EGR tube? didnt you just do the egr? the piston pumping exhaust air out through the system will make a ticking sound

With the crappy audio quality it's hard to tell but an exhaust leak can definitely sound like a ticking.

Now if you can hear it through the crow bar connected to the block it's more likely that it could be something internal but it doesn't sound like it's low end if it is something internal. More likely a collapsed lifter (something we're starting to see more of now) or a broken valve spring. Pop the rear valve cover off and have a look see.

looks and smells clean. this isn't a "ticking" , this is a slapping noise.

looking at my factory service manual but it shows nothing of what stuff could look like in there. what would a collapsed lifter look like ?

I'm guessing there would be a pushrod with more play than the others.

tomorrow, my plans are as follows..

remove rear valve cover and see if I can figure out what's going on.. if that doesn't show anything visually based on things I'm reading on different boards/here/youtube, going to do a compression test across the board and see where she's at.. hope this ends up being simple. we can hope, right?

Compression test isn't gonna tell you much in this case, but no harm I guess. Pull plug wires one by one in back, if noise changes/ gets quieter you may have some bearing issues. And you'll know exactly what cylinder to look at when pulling value cover

And if all else fails, do 40% Lucas Oil stabilizaer and 60% 15-40 rotella

But no seriously, do that.

Pull the plugs too and check them for fouling, if its a collapsed lifter the cylinder isn't getting proper air/fuel. Do a cylinder contribution test too, will most likely have a miss
