And the thing with the lithium based batteries is that they can't be refurbished. They are sealed cells wired in series.

The tesla battery pack is made of thousands of these little cells.

Put your monthly fuel bill on top of your payment for your gas car and maybe it makes upper 40s more reasonable?

:dunno:

Exactly. Say your payment is 300 a month. But you fill up 5 full tanks each month. Each tank is about 35-40 dollars. Assuming between 15-20 gallon tank. That's 175 more dollars.

So you spend 475 each month. Not including oil changes etc etc etc.

Drive a truck? Add even more to that due to tank size and terrible fuel eco.

Some of you guys are spending more than your car payment each month in gas.

With gas in the low 2 bucks a gallon nationwide that's probably a little bit of a stretch there. I would imagine the average car payment is around 250-300 bucks but maybe less. Either way, 80-100 gallons of gas per month would be a lot with most tanks around 15-20 gallons.

Wasn't there an article posted earlier in this thread that talked about the average payment being more like $500/month?

I was spending $400 a month for my 535i and about $250 for the 535D. So for someone in my position the money I would otherwise be paying for fuel sucks up over half my payment.

Agreed for your specific position. But that's roughly between 33 - 45 gallons of gas per week depending on price. I would say that's extremely atypical to go through that much fuel in a week. But then again you can get a 535i for around 20k-25k these days, so granted the Tesla saves weekly, the up front premium cost will never be recouped when it's used Tessa vs. used (insert gas car here).

$400 a month at ~20 MPG at ~$3.25 a gallon is ~2,500 miles a month. The majority of people don't even drive half that amount. And most people are paying probably ~$1 less than $3.25 for gas that I assumed.

I guess I don't see your point. I specifically mentioned that it made sense for someone in my position and it was about 1800 miles per month in cars that were driven hard. But even now that I drive a lot less the Tesla still works relative to other cars I would get. Run the numbers.

I was looking at 2014 535's last night and for shits and giggles I did the math. They are comically cheap at about $40,000 for a low mileage, heavily optioned example. Let's figure a 5 year loan for $40,000. That's $711 a month. Figure a couple hundred a month for gas. We'll say $911 all in.

Now look at a $45,000 2013 85kwh Model S. Same loan term. $800 a month. Figure another $50/ month on your electric bill too. So $850 a month.

So effectively the two cars net out at about the same cost. The more you drive, the "cheaper" the Tesla becomes. The BMW is warranted until 2018. The Tesla's entire drivetrain is warranted until at least 2021 and with unlimited miles. There's a strong case to make for the Tesla if you are already looking at executive cars. If the other cars are your short list are a Ford Fusion and a Cadillac ATS then no, it probably doesn't make sense. But if you're shopping used A6's or a 5 series, it makes a really compelling case for itself.

And also, as an interior snob, the rest of the car is so mind-fuckingly amazing (that's a real term) that you literally do not care that your nice interior isn't quite as nice as an S550. I have still yet to find a car, gas or otherwise, that even approaches the overall experience of the Model S. It is an absolutely astonishing piece of kit and faced with the opportunity to own a 2014 535 or a Model S for roughly the same spend, I would tell anyone they're crazy to consider the 5 series. And I'm a guy that LOOOOOVVVES his 2014 LED headlight, M-Sport equipped 535.

I mean look at it. That is an amazing looking car. Still go for the S though.

 i drive like a retard commute 30 miles at least daily and not a chance in hell i spend nearly anything close to my car payment in gas.

new car yes. payment over 500 yes. lucky for me gas is cheap lol.......

I don't think we were saying everyone spends their car payment in gas as well. I was saying add the gas expense to your car payment.

300 a month payment + 175-200 in gas =500 ish

Rough figures. Not everyone is the same. Some more some way less
