hands down apple airport extreme I can't tell you how many linxsys and cysco crap routers I went through before my airport

i cant do apple, after trying to deal with them with this iphone issue i want nothing to do with them.

thanks for the input tho.

I have been using this ( http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/net...?autoplay=true&tag=contentMain;contentBody;3n ) netgear router for a little over a year now and it has been awesome. It has a rock solid range of about 150ft and I have even picked it up on my cellphone from down the block.

+1 on Netgear stuff.
I've been using them for years at client sites and never had any issues.

just bought one for $30 on ebay. tired of dealing with this one and the one you guys suggested seemed to have good reviews and was a good price. thanks guys. ill post up how i like it when it arrives.

Netgear WPN824 V3 router came in today!

hooked it up, seems to run great so far.

one issue, i bought mine on ebay and it did not come with a netgear installation cd. right now it is just running unsecured, but i would like to put a password on it so that only my household can use it and not my neighbors. anyone know how to go about doing this since i do not have the original installation cd?

Thanks!

turns out netgear has their own website (http://www.routerlogin.net/) where u can set WEP security and such to your router. the problem is i dont want a long number password that i cant remember, i wanted to get something easier so that my younger brother can log on easily. unfortunately u cant do this. so im between keeping it password protected and leaving it open, unless i can find another way to make it easier.

might as well just use the long 10 digit gibberish password to be safe.

Just write it down or make it something easy for you or your brother to remember, like wangercynbros1, or something. Leaving it open is a PITA when neighbors start using your shit.

You should be able to secure the router with WPA or WPA2.
You can use a passphrase and make the key anything you want.

If the router has the option for MAC filtering, then enable that and make it to where only the MACs you list can access. Then you can leave the security disabled. But you will need to manually add the MACs to the list. do a "CMD" in the run field after you click the start button. Then type ipconfig and it will give you the MAC for the wireless card. Copy it down, then type it in the list in the router setup and apply.

definitely leaning towards the password option. going to try it either tonight or tomorrow again.
