I have a WJ, real nice SUV for the money, and had it 3 years now without any serious problems. Everything electronic on the car is shit Chinese quality crap, but the engine and trans are solid, and it's reliable.

As a Durango owner I say stay away from them. I didn't research enough before I bought one and been sinking money into it since. The later years of the first gen were a little better, but some of the common issues just take too much time to fix. Heater core for instance.

I recomend a 99+ jeep grand Cherokee, 4.7-v8 or the 4.0 inline6, I have a 99 gd Cherokee v8 with 146k miles and still drives like when I bought it with 84k miles, the only biggest issue with it was replacing the heater core (did it my self) other than that just routine maintenance like oil changes and tuneups.

If you live in Springfield, skip the 4wd. Your wife needs to understand that a good set of tires on a 2wd will give her more safety (braking and going around turns especially), plus be cheaper than 4wd (less to maintain, lower purchase price, better fuel economy, etc...).

most of them have had their blend doors/heater cores done once by now, other than that they're great. try and find one with select-trac 4wd, quadra drive doesnt always work well at higher mileage.

^^this. The wk jeep tranny had its problems, but the wj is pretty reliable, as long as fluid was changed once and a while

i can't say anything bad with the xj. this is my second xj. if you keep up with regular maintenance and use right trans fluid (dextron 4/mercon) not ATF4 the trans not have problems. here's a 97 xj from this guy i wheeled with he chopped the hatch off looks nice it's like 7.5' of lift with 35". he wheeled the crap out of his and it's still run good.

Here is my wife's jeep. If you get a wj stick with the 4.0 and make sure it is the the selec-trac (4x4 not Awd). V8 gas mileage suffers and I have heard a lot of bad things about head gaskets after 180k. Has a 2 inch budget boost with larger tires. Budget boost cost $40 off craigslist. This is how they should come from the factory. I love the jeep, good on gas for an SUV, plenty of interior room.

WJ 4.0 vs 4.7 has been beaten to death and they both have their plusses and minuses.... With no definitive conclusion on which is better.

165k on a 4.7, it isnt perfect but works just fine, and was 2500 bucks.
