At my school, you had to buy prom tickets as a couple. One of my classmates decided last minute that he wanted to go, but he couldn't find a date on short notice. He ended up bringing his younger sister with as his "date" so he could attend. His sister went off and hung out with her friends, and he hung out with his friends. He really didn't get made fun of for it either because everyone understood why he did it.
