Been in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for a few weeks now, will be here for another month or two. There’s a lot to see so I have taken a lot of photos to share here. Lots of random things that catch my eye and a few of the interesting experiences. Will build on this thread until I leave the country.
Arrived from Podgorica via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines.

After getting my visa on arrival and collecting the luggage, met a driver from the rental car agency. There are no rental cars anywhere near the airport, so it was about a 20 minute drive to the pickup location. Got through the gate and they wanted to give me this Chevrolet Orlando. Somehow it seats seven but you probably wouldn’t guess it by looking.

Did the walk around of the car pointing out the dings and scratches for the rental agreement and noticed this on the front tire. What stood out at first was that this particular tire was a Kumho, and the others all were some Chinesium brand I didn’t recognize. You never know when something like this will blow out, so I told them I wanted them to replace the tire. They told me it would be no problem, let’s throw your bags in the car, drive to your place and drop you off. We will have the tire changed and bring the car back to your place and drop it off for you. I agreed and they dropped me off and left with the car.

They bring the car back and drop it off. I go out and do another walk around and see that same Kumho tire, this time it’s on the back. I reach into the fenderwell and sure as shit, you could feel that bulge in the sidewall. Apparently their definition of repair was to flip the tire around to put the bulge on the inside where I wouldn’t see it. I called them back and told them to take the car away and that I didn’t want to do business with them anymore. Nice first experience in the country outside of the airport…

Used Airbnb for the rental, it’s a big place with a pool and the landlord was filling it when I arrived.

Something I did shortly after I arrived was to get to an ATM. It’s still very much cash based here so you always need to drag a wallet around full of paper. The currency exchange is like 11,000 Uzbekistan Som to the dollar, so to keep a few hundred bucks on you more than fills a normal wallet. This is 10,000,000 Som

There’s a big cherry tree in the courtyard of my place and I found a big ladder down in the basement. Picked a bunch of them and ate them until I was nearly sick.

Tons of really good food here, but you will not find much for anything with pork. The population is 90% muslim. The quality of the meat here is pretty good though, when they kill the animals and to make them Halal, they bleed the animal out first before butchering them. Getting that blood out seems to make the meat better in my opinion. Probably reduces the weight of the meat slightly but I guess that’s the way it goes.

Lots of places have shashlik.

They eat a fair amount of horse meat here and you can even buy it in the can at a grocery store.

These are called somsa. They have chopped up lamb and lamb fat in them and cooked in a tandoor. Really delicious.

The national dish here is called plov. We would call it pilaf. It has lamb and/or beef, the round slices are horse meat sausage. Some hard boiled quail eggs and whole cloves of garlic on there too.

Another famous dish here is called lagman. It’s kind of like chop suey or something. You can get it several different ways, either with a broth or fried, or even with the broth on the side. If you’ve ever been to China, the noodles are almost the same thing - hand made and hand stretched. Really good chew to them. Flavor profile of the dish tastes very Chinese, but of course no pork. They use beef.

Lagman restaurant was like a cafeteria inside but it’s supposed to be the best in the city.

Went to a North Korean restaurant. Didn’t get any photos of the food but was about like most other Korean restaurant I have been to.

Went to a local place that has live music and dancing up front. Lots of groups of guys having business dinners with several bottles of vodka at their table. One group invited me over for some drinks. I took a few shots but got out of there before things got out of hand.

AWESOME!!! I love your threads.

Florida plate??? and Carmax is in Uzbekistan?

Is a North Korean restaurant like any other Korean restaurant except they're always out of food? :s00ls: Okay I'll stop.
Florida plate was just a decoration. I didn’t look but it’s possible that it was originally a Japanese car.

The VW had a green plate which means it’s diplomatic relations or connected to an embassy. Very likely someone from the US brought it over at some point and earlier in the car’s life it was at a Carmax.

There are several large bazaars here in Tashkent. The city has a lot of very old history in trade due to being an important stopping point along the silk road. One particular bazaar is the Chorsu bazaar and it’s the biggest. You can see from the photo a lot of large pavilions. Each one has something different in it for types of food. I have been a couple times now to get various groceries and supplies. Typically people here shop at the bazaars and don’t go to grocery stores like we know them very often.

Bread here mostly looks like these round things. They cook them in a tandoor or giant oven and they are kind if like a giant bagel.

This is their version of a birthday cake or cake to be used for a celebration. They break off pieces and all the guests get a bite.

So, apologies if this has been asked before, but what profession are you in to afford all these travel locations and luxuries?

I’m thinking world class jet setting gigolo?
I work for a big company. I have been working remotely since being asked to leave Russia and moving back to the US.

Is stuff cheap, your money goes far?
If you eat like a local, yes. However, my experience is that in a lot of places in the markets, the sellers will take one look at you and decide what they are going to charge you. Seems like prices for a foreigner are double or triple starting out for some stuff. Need to negotiate everything.
