You should be safe, I believe that source is for the UK and not United States. If you read the article they discuss the price of other items going to 99p which is pounds.
The “99p” would be pence, like our penny. We’d write it as 99¢.

Pounds would be £99, as we would be $99 (not 99$ like the uneducated would write it).
