What's going on at Shelby American? You'll have to wait nearly a month to find out, but it looks like another spiffed-up Mustang is on the way. For now, all we have to go on is a teaser post from Shelby on social media, showing a current-gen Mustang under a cover with a promise of something special on December 15.

That's literally everything Shelby has to offer right now, and it's the first time we've heard any such news from the Las Vegas-based tuner. So basically, we're an open book as to what might be under that cover. In fact, that vehicle may not even be the subject of this announcement.

Die-hard Shelby fans know that December 15 actually has a bit of history with the company. In 2009, it was the date that the former Shelby Automobiles became Shelby American ... again. We'll spare you all the legal details, but Shelby the company experienced some turmoil through the late 1990s and early 2000s, before the official return of Shelby Mustangs in 2006 with the Hertz GT-H.

Given the significance of that 2009 announcement, we doubt it's mere coincidence that December 15 was chosen for a new one. As such, the news could be corporate in nature. But that would be supremely boring, and from our experience, Shelby doesn't do boring very well. So here's another theory with a bit more pizzaz.

Back in 2009, the Shelby American announcement coincided with the 45th anniversary of the 1965 Shelby GT350. Ford ended modern GT350 production in 2020, but perhaps Shelby will create its own version? Things get a bit confusing here, because Ford's modern Shelby Mustangs (the GT350 and GT500) are actually built completely by Ford with Shelby branding. Specialty versions like the Super Snake or Signature Edition models are tweaked by Shelby. So with the GT500 and Mach 1 holding station at Ford, now could be a good time for a proper Shelby-modified Shelby GT350.

That's all well and good, but here's a theory that stands above the rest. Shortly after the GT500 returned in 2007, Shelby offered up a GT500KR with more power, tweaked suspension, and a presence so badass it became KITT in the failed Knight Rider reboot. Ford recently announced it was dropping the aggressive carbon fiber handling package as a GT500 option. Perhaps that's because a new GT500KR is coming?

We won't know the truth until December 15. Until then, discuss amongst yourselves.

Yea not even remotely interested in anything that comes out of Shelby American. Extremely overpriced tack on cars. The trucks are even worse…

Stop it!

$30K+ gets you 800HP, new wheels, upgraded cooling, AND underhood dress caps for all of your fluids on your brand new GT500 that you just paid $125K for. That's called a bargain.

Serialized dash plaque bro!! 1 of 1! That's a replica of Carroll Shelby's signature. I know what I have!

The King of the Road Mustang is back in the new Mustang Shelby GT500KR, and it's not just an appearance package. It's also extremely rare, not cheap, and not limited to the 2022 model year, all of which we'll discuss in a bit.

First, the stats. Under the KR-specific carbon fiber hood, the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 gains a new twin-screw Whipple supercharger that displaces 3.8-liters on its own. Along with other upgrades such as a larger throttle body, cold air intake, new intercooler, pulleys, and an upgraded exhaust system, the GT500KR makes at least 900 horsepower (671 kilowatts). We say at least because Shelby currently lists the power rating as 900-plus, so there could be a few more ponies before all is said and done.

In addition to the power upgrade, Shelby gives the GT500KR height-adjustable front and rear springs, upgraded sway bars, recalibrated MagneRide suspension, and naturally, it rides on Shelby-specific 20-inch wheels, among other things. Shelby doesn't have any performance stats ready for the new KR, but with a stock Shelby GT500 capable of mid-10-second quarter-mile passes, the KR should get close to 9s.

Only 225 will be made for 2022, with 180 of those being dedicated to the US market and all of those will be 60th Anniversary models. However, existing GT500 owners for 2020 and 2021 can also get in on the KR fun by sending their cars to Shelby for a KR upfit. For obvious reasons those don't get 60th Anniversary badging, but they will be rarer because only 60 will be offered.

As for pricing, Shelby lists the 2020-2021 upfit alone at $54,995. If you want one of the 225 KRs for 2022, prices start at $127,895. That figure is based on an entry-level GT500, so if you spec it up from the factory and add more Shelby options, the price could increase quite a bit. Production is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2022.

Wheels and a blower for $55k?!?!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Oooooorrrrrrrrr send factory blower to Joker, pulley down, race pipes, and E85 tune for 1100rwhp for under $5k? Tough decision!

But then you can't stand next to it at car shows wearing jorts, knee high socks, and this Shelby shirt, pointing out your KR build number.
