According to Collider, a sequel will begin shooting this fall with an October 16, 2020 release date. The site also notes that Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, and Andi Matichak are all expected to return, with a script written by David Gordon Green, who will also direct.
This reveal isn't official, but it is far from a surprise. Just earlier this month, producer Jason Blum shared a photo of himself on Twitter alongside Curtis, who was holding a figure of her character from last year's Halloween. This was only the latest of many teases about the franchise's future, which have been happening since the previous film was released.
Last year saw the Halloween franchise return to the big screen in a big way with Jamie Lee Curtis back in the lead role as Laurie Strode, leading a massive critical and commercial success. Now, after months of planning and discussions, Blumhouse Productions have announced we are not getting one, but two sequels to close out the franchise, entitled Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends!
Blumhouse has confirmed that Curtis won’t be alone as co-writer Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down), co-writer/director David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and the one and only franchise creator/horror legend John Carpenter (The Thing) will all be returning for the next two installments.
Halloween Kills will be released on Friday, October 16, 2020, directed by Directed by David Gordon Green and written by David Gordon Green & Danny McBride & Scott Teems.
Halloween Ends will be released on Friday, October 15, 2021, directed by David Gordon Green and written by David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, and Paul Brad Logan and Chris Bernier.
Speaking with Collider, Curtis said: “What I love that David and [writer] Danny [McBride] and company did is they connected the dots for forty years, now they’re going back to really unpack the first movie, bringing back all those characters whose lives were affected by what happened in 1978.” It was previously revealed that Anthony Michael Hall had joined the cast as Tommy Doyle, while Kyle Richards would reprise her role as Lindsey Wallace from the 1978 original. Tommy and Lindsey were two of the kids Laurie babysat on Halloween night in the original film. Meanwhile, Robert Longstreet is playing Lonnie Elam, who was a kid who bullied Tommy in the original film.
Both Tommy and Lindsey experienced the terror of Michael Myers’ rampage the first time around and lived to tell the tale. Lonnie, meanwhile, never had a run-in with Michael. But it’s clear from Curtis’s statement that these next two sequels will continue to explore how the horrible events of Halloween night 1978 continue to haunt certain residents of Haddonfield.
