I went with 235/40/18, General G-MAX RS and has a tread width which is 8.2" and weighs 22 lbs.

Some tires with the same listed width can actually have different tread widths. For example, Firestone Indy 500s are only 7.8" tread width in that same 235/40/18 and they weigh 24 lbs.

Take a look at TireRack for their specifications for whatever tires you are comparing, along with their weight. Going with a light-weight wheel only to go with an overly heavy tire would be somewhat self-defeating.

Looking at the continental extreme contact sports. 8.1” 22 pounds, coming from 225/40/18 hankooks that are 7.7” 22pounds.

The CECS is a great tire. Continental owns General, and apparently the compound for the CECS is very similar to the G-MAX RS (360 treadwear for the RS vs 340 for the CECS).

Either one would be a solid choice at a far better value than the Michelin PS4S (still absolute best tire, though).

Isn’t there a speedometer issue with 235/40 being a taller tire? Or is that something that can be changed with OBDeleven or VCDS?

Like the other Dan said, it's about 1.2% different than the OEM 225/40/18. With the new tires, I set my cruise today at 50, and my GPS also read 50. So with the typically optimistic OEM speedometer, it is now almost precisely calibrated. I'll try it again at higher speeds and compare to GPS to see if it still is spot on or off a little bit.

On the factory wheels and tires and my cruise set to anything over 72ish my GPS speed on the escort is one faster so you may be on to something.

Www.willtheyfit.com is nice for calculating the difference in wheel and tire combos. Shows speedo difference and how much the new setup will poke in or out so you can roughly figure out if you’ll rub.

Where did you order conical bolts from? Black Forest industries has some nice black m14x1.5 27mm lug bolts but the shipping is outrageous.

I just bought a second hand Cobb AP for about $500. I downloaded the revised Cobb maps which were recently updated to version 103.

The new Cobb OTS dyno numbers are quite similar now to the recently updated APR high torque numbers, both for Stage 1 93 Octane whp and wtq. Cobb is down about -12 whp, but + 11 wtq (peak #'s). The area under the curves looks fairly similar, too. Considering the Cobb tunes are considered to be fairly conservative, I might be content with this for awhile.

Anyway, there are plenty of other OTS and protunes available for the Cobb Accessport for more power than the Cobb setups. Plus, the ability to resell it if you get rid of your car is a nice perk. Sell your car after you have APR, and that stays with the car... Aside from killing the warranty, I feel that the Cobb AP is the way to go.

Where can you get other Cobb tunes besides Cobb directly?

I've been mulling over trying Cobb but as you said, their tunes are all conservative.
Stratified, Freektune, MAP, IE, EQtuning are the ones I know about.

EQtuning seems to have the best customer support and is the "flavor of the month" on the MK7 forum right now. Stage 2 Golf R #'s are 392hp and 430tq according to their dyno graph here:

https://eqtuning.com/collections/vw-audi/products/eqt-ecu-base-map-tune-vw-mk7-gti-golf-r

The tuners are typically coming out with their own DSG tunes as well.
