What are your alls thoughts on building a pfsense box? I have a spare Atom N230 and an LGA1155 system here that I'm thinking about using. Probably would rip the CPU out and put in an I3-3240T. 2G RAM and some sort of SSD from the pile say 80-128G worth.

The other option is I put a VM on my Linux Desktop and run it there.

I love this meme. It describes some of the devs I work with so much.

Right now I'm writing docs because I reverse engineered a home brew backup system written in a mix of C and Python. No documentation to it. I was lucky to find the source code, but it was really the MySQL full query logging that got me sorted. The tool to decrypt data from AWS was segfaulting and I had no reasoning of why. The guy who wrote it is long gone now. I feel for you man.

Man I shouldve stayed in school.
90% of my it knowledge is from real world and the internet. School just gives you a good core, after that its up to you to choose and develop a path you enjoy, whether it is programming, networking, hardware builds, server swaps, etc... Lots and lots of different directions with IT.

The tin foil hatted guy is right. The education is to get you in the door. If you can make it that far, flex into where you want to go.

That said, I have a few rules I try to live by
1-Keep an open mind and open eyes. You never know when you'll see some cool random shit that will save your neck. I've been hacking on Linux stuff for 25 years (holy fuck btw) and I'm still seeing and doing new stuff.
2-Small pieces are a good thing. Some of this shit is super frustrating. I've been reverse engineering this backup shit for months at this point. Some coder would have looked at it probably, shrugged and been like "oh it does this and this."
3-It's better to know how to learn stuff than to know stuff; What you know is finite, a person's ignorance (myself included, likely especially) is not. See rule 1 as well.
4-I hacked a lot of hours on shit when I was younger. Not saying someone can't do it now, but they need to put the time in. Tonight I'm doing a distribution upgrade of my Linux box. I'll probably be fighting this fucking thing for a week because these act silly. At the same time, it's how you learn.
5-If you aren't learning something new, move on. This is different than being stuck on a problem. If you can get the right collaboration being stuck on a problem is super educational. I'm a firm believer in the addage you can have 10 years experience or a years experience 10 times over.
6-My rule is I prefer to solve more problems than I cause. If you can do that you're ahead of the game (and most people) and flex into the rest. You'd be surprised how many people out there cause more drama than they fix.
6A-On the topic of flexing, use your strengths to get into other dominions that give you a pathway to where you want to go. I did a decent amount of stuff with building Exadatas out in our last environment? Why? Because I had server/networking skills and I was able to apply them in a critical way to those systems.

If you have any specific technologies you want to discuss feel free to ask. Lots of people here in a lot of different areas; I'm heavily into infrastructure but dabble lots of places personally.

Yup. I will say sometimes I fucking thrive on that frustration and can go hours and hours getting something solved without even realizing the time going by.
Yes, seen a heavy smoker go 8-12 hours without smoking because of a problem. That focus to the point of insanity is powerful.

I used to work for someone that was so focused and intense on work that he'd forget he had to go to the bathroom. All of a sudden he'd look up with that, "my bladder is about to explode" look, and do this weird walk to the bathroom, hoping that something doesn't rupture and pisses himself. One time he did that, grabbed the door knob to the one-holer, and it was locked. He totally froze up. I think he was on the verge of creating a flood. Fortunately for him the women's one-holer opened up and he went for it.
