I know we're drifting into the networking side of things in this thread, but I'd really like to have more Ethernet runs through the house and use as little wi-fi (RF) as possible. Just such a pain to run CAT cables when you're on a slab, and the stud cavities have fire breaks.
Try being on slab and not having an attic. Lol I haven't even attempted it. I've just decided it's not in the cards for this house

It’s amazing how much more cool shit I can, and will, do now that I’m no longer on a two story slab. With my last house, sure, I could run stuff to the bedrooms through the attic and into the garage to the shop but with this house, I can run anything anywhere.

Highly recommend not having a slab. 0/10 would not buy ever again.

Being in an apartment, I can't do anything but run wires along walls. If I really want to hide them I'd buy the wire channels with snap covers so I could at least run them in a channel to hide them.

I have an attic spot above the bedrooms, but I need something to get from there to the living room/kitchen/garage side. Downside Im seeing of having a tri level/split level. Hell I found out my comcast cable runs from the garage, all the way to the other side of the house, outside, and then inside to my mechanical room.

Also highly recommend living where I can run romex wherever the fuck I want. I haven't needed to yet, but I know when I need to it'll be a breeze.

WD SN850x 4TB is 43% off on Amazon! 10.02GB per $ for a full 7.3GB/s

Using some of my Tax Return to make a birthday gift to myself this year so I can put it in my gaming PC, which is running short on space, I've got two 1TB drives at near 90% full with my games. This will double the space for games, and double the speed.

Darnit, I'm impatient! The drive won't arrive till like Monday.

I'm moving my Steam games over to the now much larger drive from my old 1TB SATA SSD. Kinda funny to look at the disk IO usage. The Sata SSD is pegged at 100% read, while the new SN850x is only showing about 8% usage. lol. The SATA read usage is averaging about 520MB/s. Still reads nice n fast for a SATA, that's about as fast as SATA can go.

Picked this up from best buy tonight

They have it on sale for $289 right now, which is pretty decent for the amount of storage you're getting. There's a 20 TB model as well, but for the price of this one, i'll take the hit on the 2 TB. At this point I don't see myself maxing this one out any time soon at all.

EDIT, looks like you are still safe with these as it looks like they still come with CMR drives up to the 18TB capacity. The 20TB capacity looks like WD switched to a SMR Hitachi white label drive.

Only thing to watch out for with these now is that the drives they come with are probably SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording). The issue with Shingled is when you dump a bunch of data onto it, or it has to write to overlapping tracks the write speed can grind to a halt. Like 1.44MB floppy disk speeds from the 1980's.

It also makes data recovery more difficult. not quite SSD level difficult, but definitely more complex.

SMR is great for WORM loads (Write Once, Read Many). But if you are constantly thrashing the drive with a ton of writes its terrible.

its not feasible to back it up to any service. And I'd need an LTO-7 tape library that holds at least 16 tapes to make archival feasible. It would actually cost me less to build less capable system that could store the snapshots on a set of completely separate hardware.

Instead, I rely on the double redundancy of RaidZ2, and having the blu-rays on a shelf if I had to re-rip them. I can lose any 2 drives per array and have the system keep going. I have ZFS set to scrub the file system for bit-rot once a month.

I added up all the raw storage in the system. 112TB.
(12) 8TB Disks
(3) 4TB SSDs
(3) 10k SAS
(2) 256GB NVMe SSD
(2) 128GB SATA SSD

When I finally begin running out of space I'll replace the 12 8TB disks with 6x 24TB disks and migrate all of the data to the new pool, then retire the 8TB drives. That will probably take a while, I still have about 23TB free.

Currently annoyed as shit right now at my Gaming PC.

Averaging 47C at idle, doing NOTHING.

And during gaming sessions, mid 80's. If I hit it with prime 95, instantly to 90c and it throttles down to 4.1ghz. The CPU 3dmark score dropped from 11,700, to 11,000.

I just cleaned and reapplied the thermal paste, no difference. All fans are working and clean. The AIO pump is working.

I changed the orientation of the AIO radiator to see if maybe there was an air bubble in there I couldn't hear, and nope, nothing.

Only thing I can think of is some kind of change in the BIOS when I recently flashed it causing CPU Vcore to spike the temps. There is no WAY this system should hit 90° full load.

When I built it, the max it would see was 73° on a Prime 95 burn-in.

I don't hear any air bubbles, but I think the AIO has something in it, causing problems. Unfortunately, I'm really limited on cooler height in my case, which is why I went with an NZXT Kraken X53. Which should easily handle a Ryzen 5800x (and it did, when I first built it).
