^^^Agreed. But today, I got harassed by a salesman at Gerald Nissan. I went to look at a new Xterra Pro-4x, but they had sold it the day before. The guy asked me if i wanted to look at the used one they had on the lot and drive it, to get a feel of them. I told him I would like to, but had no intention of buying a used X. So i get back from the test drive and was met at the door with the sales manager with a purchase contract....
I was not happy camper at this point. I don't mind being thorough, but that pushy is too much. I have a career in Ag Sales and if I was that pushy i would be chased off farms with a shot gun
Also, I highly suggest grabbing your own financing or going in with cash. There's nothing worse than playing the "how much do you want your monthly payments to be" game with a car salesman.
Yeah that's how I am with customers, most of them are totally taken back by the fact that I'm not chasing them out of the dealership retracting what I said. If they like the car they do, if not I'd rather find someone else that does than sell it for nothing to someone who doesn't even really like it. I had one of my cars parked at a dealer down the street for the day because they had someone who wanted to see it, but I did too so I met my customer at their dealer. The guy drove it, gets out of the car, and starts being a total dick about the price (this was an 07 accord in perfect shape that I said I'd give him for 9k which I thought was pretty fair). He gets out and says "honestly I don't even like it so what's the best price you can give me". I said if you don't like car then I think you should move on to another dealer and find something you'll enjoy, got in my car, and drove off. Look of shock on the guys face in my rear view was priceless. I actually give much better deals to people that are nice, I keep the price high for the assholes. If a nice guy is looking at a $4,000 car and offers me $3,500, chances are I'll say how about $3k as long as I have the room.
Where do you work?
That's how it should be done. I only looked at that used truck just to drive an Xterra, when he knew damn well I wanted new and more options. I told him before the test drive, that I didn't want to waste his time looking at used because there was no way in hell i was going to buy it. So, I guess he saw it as a game to get me to buy the vehicle.
Everyone I have dealt with is a jackass. I brought a girl to the dealer because she wanted a new car. When we were about to get in the car for the test drive he said "you can't come with". I asked why not and he said "I'm 45 years old, its not like I am going to touch her". Needless to say we turned around and got the hell out of there. Fucking scumbag.
Another trick that you have to be careful that they pull is the extended warranty thing. I had the factory warranty still left on my car as it only had 16,000 miles on it when I bought it. They sold me a 3 year/36k extended warranty. I was lead to believe that it is an additional 36k miles on top of what I had. That would make the warranty good until 52k miles. Nope, expired the same day the factory one did. What a waste of $1,700. They get A LOT of people on that.
I was in the dealer the other day and said I was just browsing. Guy asked for my number so he could call me with new inventory and I said I would just check the website. Fucking guy rolled his eyes at me so I just walked out. His dealership definately lost my business.
Extended warranties are extremely profitable for dealerships.
It's dealers like that that make a bad name for all of us. Assholes.
Word. But then again, they're the big box dealerships who get that classification of being stingy, jackoffs... I (we, assuming you work for a smaller used car dealer as well) Get classified as the scumbag used car salesman with the Goodwill store suit and the bad combover.
Sidenote, a lot of people don't know this, but you can negotiate your finance rate most of the time, especially if you have good credit. For example if you get approved for 3.9% by the bank the dealership can make a decent chunk by telling you 5.9% or 6.9%. They WILL finance you at the real rate though if you negotiate it, they still make money just not as much.
Ya they also tried the ole bait and switch on me. They asked me if I needed financing. I told the salesman that I was already preapproved. He asked me what the rate was and I told him 7.25%. So he went to the finance manager and said he could match it. Next day when I went to sign the paperwork they said I was 9.75%. I was pissed and almost walked out but it took me so long to find this car. He told me there was no way the salesmen could have told me that because he wouldn't know. Then he told me just go get it refinanced. That's what I ended up doing. It didn't cost me any money, just the hassle of all the paperwork.
I've had probably better experiences at small used lots vs big dealers. Theyre usually nicer because they can't just be running people off their lot and getting a bad rep. Downside is they just don't have the inventory so if I didnt like the 1 car I was interested in I go somewhere else

Yeah they would've made a couple grand extra from the bank if you signed at that.
But you pay the Carmax tax. It's worth it if you don't know anything about cars because you get a consistent product but if you know how to buy a car, you're almost always going to get the same car for significantly less money elsewhere.Wow, it's to bad there isn't a place that sells used cars where they not only check them out first, they will let you return it in 5 days for a 100% refund. And they show you their best price right away so you don't have to haggle. Bet if there was such a place it would make billions...........lol
