Default fried coil pack

Went to prime my fresh rebuild today. And smelled some burning and saw my transistor pack smoking. Plugs were pulled out of the motor at the time to prime the motor. As you can see the #2 cracked, and started oozing out plastic. And the pack was almost too hot to handle. What would make this happen?

Old Age, plus the coils trying to fire when you were cranking, but the voltage had no-where to go, so it heated up and found a path.

So say if i had the spark plug in the wire it would of at least had a place to go? And i also had the power transistor unplugged at the time.

i normally unhook the module that fires the coils when i prime the motor, leave everything else hooked up and pull the fuel pump fuse
