Zobrist is having a great year, but his WAR, at 2.3, isn't anything to write home about. He leads the NL in batting average, but is down on RBI's.

Rizzo was slumping pretty bad during the beginning of the season, but has come on strong. His slugging percentage is only mediocre this season, and he's down on RBI's and HR's from years past.

Bryant has been injured forever, so can't even be in the conversation for this season.

On an average year, I would say Baez is the 3rd best player on the Cubs, behind Rizzo and Bryant. But this year, Baez has outclassed all of his teammates. Zobrist is a great utility guy, and his flexibility is unparalleled on the Cubs.

Also, the last time Rizzo did NOT hit 30 home runs in a season was 2013...just seems like an off year for him

You have 3 players better than him on your own team but that's cub fans for you. I know you guys don't know much about the actual game of baseball. He flips his bat and acts like douche on the field, HE'S AWESOME!!!!!
Overrated by what metric exactly? The fact that you use Arenado as your comparison just proves that Baez is a top tier player this year.

Baez and Arenado are actually a really good comparison.
Their BA, runs, hits, and RBIs and slugging are all within spitting distance of each other, which each edging the other out in a few categories.

Baez beats Arenado in WAR and smashes him in stolen bases (21 to 2)

Arenado beats Baez in OBP and by extension OPS.

Baez has played 4 defensive positions in his major league career and Arenado has only played 3rd base.

Arenado is arguably the best 3rd basemen in the game, but he's not as versatile as Baez.

No one here is saying that Baez is the "best player of all time". Simply that he is definitely in the conversation for ML MVP this year. To say that he isn't is just being obtuse.

Yeah but they're not.... They will have a lot of money to spend and they don't make stupid deals like Heyward and Darvish. Speaking baseball with you guys is like an astro-physicist speaking rocket propulsion with a high school chemistry teacher.
LOL, yea the Sox have never made any "stupid" deals.

Heyward is a gold glove in RF for what, 4 consecutive years now? Add to that he's been much better at the plate this year. Jury is still out on Darvish, we'll have to see how he comes back from injury next year. That doesn't change the fact that Darvish was the best pitcher available when the Cubs were looking.

Oh and what about that "Coors field effect"?

Comparing Baez to some of the best players in baseball doesn't help your point, it only cements mine.

He's hitting .293/.325/.571 with 32 doubles, eight triples, 25 homers, 89 RBI, 74 runs and 19 steals. He does everything, except take walks. Still, every player doesn't have to be the so-called "Moneyball" prototype. There's room for different guys in any discussion of best players in baseball, and the Cubs wouldn't be close to where they are without Baez. He trails only Cain, Carpenter and Freeman in position player WAR.

Baez has been the most valuable everyday player on a first-place Cubs team, and his WAR total helps reflect the value of his defensive versatility and 19 steals.

But Baez has a .325 on-base percentage that drags down his overall offensive profile relative to the rest of the league. The only time in the past 40 years that a position player won the MVP Award with an OBP below .350 was Andre Dawson in 1987. He, too, was a Cub, so maybe there's some cosmic symmetry there, but Baez would still appear to have his work cut out for him if the usual standards are applied here.
So is this.

I thought you knew since you told me I was comparing him to names in the MVP race. It's Jose Abreu. Like I have said, repeatedly, he is having a career year. Outside of Matt Carpenter, the other guys in the MVP race have been there for years. He has a lot to prove to be regarded as an elite player. Which, by definition, would be considered over rated.

So your knocks on him are that he should have a higher OBP, and he flipped his bat?

What do you not understand about THIS YEAR? Name someone on here who has called him a year over year elite player? He definitely has more to prove in the coming years. That doesn't mean he's overrated by being talked about for NL MVP.

You are using a strawman argument here. It's not working.

My first knock on him is I don't like the way he plays the game but drunken Uncle Joe has some blame there.

My 2nd knock is that he has proven to be a streaky player that gets a pass by the cubbie faithful. The same people that anointed Schwarber the 2nd coming of Babe Ruth. Compare his stats to Moncada during the same AB's in the beginning of their career. That makes me laugh even harder.

His numbers trail quite a bit. The fact that he is in the MVP discussion just proves my point that it's due to the popularity of the team. Again, the definition of over rated.

Weak arguments. His stats and the plays he makes don't lie.

oh and to a previous point I only knew you were comparing him to Arenado because you said so. I didn't look at the 3 year stats seriously because that's not what this discussion was about. Just because you contort the narrative into what suits you best and put words in people's mouths doesn't make it true.

Gotta run. Keep hatin' and Javy will keep rakin'
