Needed something for until the 1g is done so picked up a 96 Cherokee! 2wd, manual windows(after driving a jeep with non working windows this is a plus haha), and 5spd! Really clean with hardly any rust, but is fairly high mileage since its sitting on 215k

Trans, transfercase and front axle is all you need to make it 4wd. All bolts in, and can find it all for cheap.

Surprisingly it drives really nice for 215k, clutch takes a little getting use to(its new, just use to mr2's, subies, or racing clutches), but other than that no issues so far!! Think I'll keep it 2wd as I never use 4wd anyways! Slap on a dsm sticker and call it a day, just need to get to work with it, and since it's so clean I don't want to hack it up with mods although some hella's would look good...

Well drove it a lot today since it has plates and insurance, drives great and I'm use to the clutch now. Still don't like the lack of a tach but besides that no complaints. checked the code and its for either o2 or the cat, but either way not worried, until emissions pops up... Car overall seems like a very solid purchase for a price that was too good to be true! Have a couple areas I should prep as there is small spot on roof with bare metal, and very very slight rust on passenger rocker behind tire but otherwise clean of any rust

Deng, '96. I would have thought that was going to be old enough to avoid emissions. Probably an easy fix anyhow. Damn you for getting that, especially around here. Jeeps like that are just completely rusted away.

I also use to have a '96 cherokee 2wd, 5-speed. Bought it from a couple that moved here from CA. No need for 4wd.
