I did almost the same thing except I broke most of the post off. Don't throw your starter out it's easy to fix. All I did was grind the post flush, then drilled and tapped the plate to a 1/4"-20 thread. Then I went out and bought a 1/4"-20x3/8" stainless steel socket cap bolt and a couple stainless steel washers and it's not given me a single problem for two years.
