Yah, I said it... lol, I want something to rack miles on as the GMC is approaching 25,000 already... driving 500-800 a week. Everyone selling a Civic is on drugs and wants 3-4k for a decent one.... found that escorts are selling between 900-1300 for good ones. I want a 1991-1996 (the boxy ones) in either a 2 door or wagon, no 4 door as they have NO trunk space whatsoever, and I would be using this for work and commuting and need the space. Anybody have experience with the 1.9 that came in these cars and the 5-speed manual trans? Manual is a must because I will get bored as shit driving one of these with an auto.

Any other recommendations car wise? Main concern is fuel economy and a presentable car... not first date presentable but not a total rustbucket...

TIA

the saturn s-series is also a good beater. cheap parts, 35+mpg, 5 speed manual. 1.9l. i just picked up 2 of them for 1800 bucks

and more storage space IMO then an escort

Will check them out... for some reason I have always felt the ford shitbox build quality in the 90's was a bit better than GM.

Hmm, will keep in mind those strut mounts

I was going to title this "dasfinc tell me what ford to buy"

dasfinc is probably the only one with personal experience.

Roflmao, I'm sorry that I'm a ford swinger!

The 1.9 is a tank of a motor, and the transmission is a stout piece as well. I flipped a 95 "Pony" a while back that was a 1.9 with the 5 speed, and my old roomate owned a 5 door hatch 95 with the 1.9 and an auto for many years.

Neither of the ones I drove had even the slightest mechanical issue, neither burned oil, leaked, or had and kind of mis or studder. Surprised the hell out of me in that regard.

The 5 speed I picked up needed both slave and master cylinders for the clutch (both were easily replaced, and cost $116 total), drove it home just fine by giving it a double pump to get it into first, and drove it clutchless the rest of the way like it was nothing.

Predictably rust is an issue on these years (91-96), and being that old most of them have suspension that is getting long in the teeth (Broken endlinks, clunking struts, bad balljoints/control arm bushings). All very cheap to repair, but annoying to replace on a car you plan on beating into the ground with miles.

Both of the ones I drove got over 32mpg mixed driving, and I haven't heard about these motors having headgasket or timing belt/chain related failures commonly. They are BALLS slow, and only had like 86 or 109hp depending upon the year/trim.

Many come with 13 inch rims/tires which are like $32 a tire, which is nice if you are going to be plugging serious miles onto it, and wagons are quite common.

As far as space goes, they were fine, the 5 door sedan was cool in regards to having more usable rear space compared to the 4 door, and the wagon will be cavernous of course. The interiors reminded me of the 88-91 Civics, VERY similar honestly in layout of the center console, and many of the controls.

Will one do what you need it to do? Yes. Will it be balls slow and probably need Suspension/Brakes? Yes.

I'd also take a look at 97+ Generation of Escorts, they can be had just as cheaply and are less prone to rust issues, will be just as resilient, and have a spec more power with the 2.0 engine.

I'd also take a look at a 2.0 Zetec powered Contour, they can be had with a 5 speed, and can probably get 30mpg+ if driven right. They are also a dime a dozen, have more space, and a slightly more modern interior than the escort.

The Saturns as SilentD said aren't bad choices either, they are usually a little oil thirsty and have some occasional head issues are the main cons to those. I am not a fan of their interiors either in all honesty, otherwise they aren't bad.

And why the hell would s00ls have any kind of experience or input on these kinds of cars?

Exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to check out the 4 banger contours again... I bought one for a friend of mine a year or so ago, it was the V6 (duratec motor I believe) with a 5 speed. Nice car and decent power.

The contour I helped my friend by a few months ago is having some typical rust issues which are proving to be annoying (Rusted trans line leaking causing a mis-diagnosed trans pan gasket *auto*), but the motor has been running like a swiss watch at 125K.

The V-6 contours are nice, but will be a bit thirsty *I'd expect 20mpg mixed driving honestly, probably 25 or so on the highway like a DOHC Taurus* (and are much harder to find for decent money with a 5 speed in good shape)

I have a big pool of worthless knowledge in this respect

Not at all concerned with the power honestly, if its faster than a Frightliner I'm good to go. Also planning on doing moderate weight reduction to get this thing into the 40s MPG wise (Prius what?)

Not much to shave out of them honestly, they are pretty spartan cars, but if you are hyper-milling I'm sure you could crack 40mpg.

I worked with a guy who swore by his Escort GT as for eating up the miles reliably and with good gas mileage.

The GT's have a 1.8 Mazda motor/Trans with some more power, but they are geared more aggressively (slightly worse highway MPG), and are becoming increasingly hard to find in decent shape. On a side-note those only came in a 5 speed, if you can find one in good shape I'd recommend snapping it up in a heartbeat.

Some day I'd kinda like to do a 1.8 turbo mazda swap into a wagon one, I think it would be a riot of a daily driver.

Yeah I'm not expecting much... if I get a wagon it will have no carpet past the front seats, rhino lined, spare, etc all gone... just for kicks lol.

I'll keep an eye out I've got CL open during most classes lol.

And its all good, I have a worthless knowledge base with pretty much everything GM

Famous last words...

"You ever consider a ranger?"

4 banger, 5 speed, SUPER easy to work on, 98+ standard cab's have plenty of room (I'm 6'2" and fit comfortably in mine) and cab he had cheap as hell. I got 28mpg highway/22-23 city out of mine with an automatic back when it was still a 4 cylinder.

If you are looking for a gas miser-parts hauler and don't need to seat other people, a 95+ Ranger I'd recommend over an escort all day. (95 is the interior redesign, looks WAY nicer inside, 98 is the body re-design, 3 inches more rear-ward seat travel, and a coil-sprung front end in 2wd guise)

It'd probably feel counter-intuitive since you already have a truck, but it'd get the job done cheaply/easily/reliably.

Considered it... but my concern overall is fuel economy. I'm getting 17 in my GMC when I'm not trailering, and if I need to move big stuff I'll just drive it....

Essentially, I'm selling my XJ and Mercedes and need a beater on insurance because then I qualify for multi car discount and save about $500/ year by having 2 cars and boat as opposed to just truck and boat. Figure I might as well get something that can save me money in fuel

if that's the case I'd still take any 1992-1995 honda civic over any economical ford offering in all honesty. Emissions exempt, can be fixed from nearly any model of the Honda parts bin, Rust and price are the only enemies.

I can literally replace a motor in a civic with hand tools and my hoist in 4 hours without thinking about it twice (I've done this like 5 times).

My Civic CX got 38-42mpg, With a B18 motor swap it still got 32-35mpg (with me constantly beating the hell out of it) and squeaked out a 15.5 with a bone stock acura integra LS motor (142hp).

Price wise they aren't that bad still:

Hardest thing to wrap through my head is the price.... I don't want to spend more than about 1,750 and would like to be lower. I've found rust free escorts with 13x,xxx miles for under 1,200 bucks... that seems like what all these cars (civic, escort, cavalier, etc, etc) should sell for IMO.

Escorts rot out from underneath (rear shock towers, Kicker panels etc), they hide it well. Don't assume they are rust free until you look under one, noone will post their ad on craigslist saying "Clean, not a spec of rust minus the missing floorpan!"

I'm still seeing 92-95 civics go for the similar money. They will usually have far more miles, but I'd trust a 180K civic over a 140K mile escort honestly :dunno:.

My dad's 92 civic was undercoated from the factory, I see quite a few that have been in the midwest. (This is why they seem to often only have the rear quarter panels rot out and nothing else in IL)

They are rock solid cars, cheap to maintain too. And because they come with skinny 13" tires they are decent in the snow. A set of snow shoes would be cheap as chips for them. I never had any problems with my 91 and 93 Escorts.

My first car was a 91 Escort Wagon LX. And my 2nd car was a 93' Escort hatch base.

The 1.9L engine is nearly indestructible. I think the only think that could kill it would be to drain the oil out and drive it it it explodes. Otherwise they will run for ever.

And they are SLOWWWWWWWWWW

88hp out of the 1.9L in a 2300-2400lb car. I took it to the track once when we had a rental and my GTA was broken. Best was a 19.1 @ 71mph with a 3.1 60 foot and no spin. It was just that slow. Should have bracket raced it, would have made a killing.

Too bad... I would've replaced the front bumper and driven the hell out of your old civic... I've found a few escorts I might look at and drive, but no final decisions yet. Like I said, I'm just buying this because I'd like a 2nd car insured to keep my rates down, and figure if I'm going to spend money on something, it might as well be something that I can use instead of just sit.
