In theory it sits on the outside of the trans, like a transfer case, but instead of sending power to the front wheels, it acts like a rear diff in reverse, spinning the driveshaft to the rear diff.

is it active all the time, or only when the car thinks it needs rear wheel drive assistance?

I cannot confirm the validity of this quote, but it would confirm my suspicion that it goes along in FWD, and will send to the back when needed

Quote:
The Sedan PI and Utility PI from Ford come standard as AWD. Under normal conditions, both vehicles are driven by the front wheels. If the front wheels lose traction, even on dry pavement, the AWD system reacts within 0.1 milliseconds to distribute up to 100 percent of the torque to any one wheel or combination of wheels. The AWD paired with traction control can distribute up to 100 percent of the available torque to the wheel (or wheels) with the most traction.

In a FWD-priority system, if both rear wheels are deemed to have the same traction, AWD will distribute the available power evenly between the rear wheels. If the AWD detects that only one rear wheel has traction, all the rear torque will go to that wheel. If one rear wheel has more traction than the other rear wheel, the AWD will determine the right amount of torque to split between each wheel.

The AWD may distribute up to 100 percent of the torque to any one wheel, front or rear, left or right. For example, the left front tire may be the only one of the four with traction, so it will get all of the torque. Or it may be the right rear.

Importantly, the on-demand AWD systems also improve driving dynamics. Only stability control will limit understeer (or throttle-off oversteer) as you enter a corner or cross a median strip. However, both throttle-on understeer and throttle-on oversteer are greatly reduced by AWD.

The AWD system continuously monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, steering wheel angle and wheel slip to seamlessly deliver torque to the appropriate wheel. This helps to eliminate torque steer from the 305 hp 3.7L V6 in the Sedan PI, the 304 hp 3.7L V6 in the Utility PI and the 365 hp 3.5L EcoBoost V6 optional in the Sedan PI. In fact, this also helps to balance the Sedan PI and the Utility PI during hard cornering because in a curve, the front wheels are asked to both steer the vehicle and propel the vehicle

Funnily enough, according to the same article, the system apparently started life in Volvos, Ford bought Volvo and took a bunch of their parts (the Taurus chassis is based on the Volvo S60/80 and XC90) and uses its Haldex based AWD system.

I had a S60 with AWD that blew out the output shaft on the PTU and it's apparently not an uncommon occurrence.

yeah, it's an on demand system. with tires being different size the car thinks it's slipping and sends power to the back wheels. most FWD based systems are like this. the system isn't designed to be awd all the time, it overheats and eventually fails. at least that's my theory

I would say that's a pretty sound theory. At least that was my logic when I bought mine. The spec for the tires shouldn't be greater than 2/32nd's out between tires front to back or side to side

I have good and bad news Alex B will not be buying a new vehicle for himself anytime soon. I stopped running carfaxes for him a few weeks ago and I figured something was wrong so i sent him a text and he gave me the bad news. As for the good news he will be buying something at the end of 2019 or early 2020 so carry on and keep pressuring him to buy a old cop car or a g8 or even a low mileage gtp

This will not go over well, as the SHO has mediocre suspension and brakes and a "meh" awd system. The people on this site, most of whom haven't taken a fast corner in their life and couldn't drive a stock audi to within even 60% of its limits, insist on handling superiority for their commutes down 290 and 355

I mean, if the SHO is a commuter, who cares that the suspension won't be able to handle super well, or the AWD system isn't going to be great on a track. I can tell you first hand, the AWD system is great in the snow. The brakes are another story...I upgraded my brakes to 2013+ spec, and they were better, but still not great. But the SHO should be a few hundred pounds less than the Flex, so should be better.
