Allegedly due to size constraints, as this 7.3 replaces the 6.8 V10 as the engine for all the RVs and fleet vehicles, etc, and the manuf's were complaining it took up too much space.

It will be interesting to see the power numbers on the 7.3L. As well as fuel economy and long term reliability.

lol That. But more. The LS has more in common to the SBF than the old SBC.

Things like the bore spacing, the number of head bolts, the head bolt location, pushrod location & angle, lifter location, non-siamese intake and exhaust ports, oil system, coolant system, 5.0 HO firing order, and other things are more SBF than old SBC. It's well documented. heck, guys have installed LS heads on SBF with very little modifications. But honestly, other than having something different, why bother? lol Build an LS or Clevor SBF.

I love the LS engine family. But between the similarities to the SBF and some Mopar in the bottom end, GM engineer did their homework and came up with a great motor. They continued to improve on it over time to. They kept that pushrod motor relevant for a long time!

I'm so damn excited for the 7.3. I hope that oil pump doesn't turn out to be a nightmare.

But, the "leaked" power numbers I'm hearing kick ass.

Same. As long as "variable" doesn't include it's lifespan, I'm swinging hard.

so if a GM 5.3 takes 8.5 quarts, this 7.3 should take 11.7 qts of oil

It says for reduced engine height and width. Which makes sense. But how wide is it as is? A truck usually has a lot of engine bay room. So how big would it have been? lol

It's not entirely for the trucks, it's whatever else this thing ends up in (aka everything a 6.8 V10 has been in the last 10yrs). So the reduced size when crammed in a Class A motorhome was ideal.

The 6.2 makes 385/420...you'd have to assume the 7.3 would make more than that...

Maybe won't make that much HP, but you'd have to assume 500+ torque seems almost guaranteed

It's supposed to be over 400hp. The part I'm really excited about is the 500-550lb ft of torque that is supposed to be a better curve than the v10.

The v10 never got anything better than the 5R though. The new 7.3 should be awesome with the 10 speed, if I can get over all the shifting it'll do.

The V10 made 457 lb ft at 3250 rpms with something like 90% of that available from 1500rpms to 4500rpms.

That makes sense. But motorhomes have less space than a pickup? Being lighter and more compact is a good thing. *edit* drrr I went back and saw variable cam timing.

If it has a flat torque curve mated to the 10 speed should be interesting. Especially of the OD in the trans offers decent fuel economy.
