3800 General Computer question

i was trying to receive pics from someone on YIM it said "file transfer error" and .. "Unable To receive " someone had suggested it was because of my firewall ... how do i check that ? is there a preference setting or something ... i have no clue... iam running XP Pro.. if that matters

are you using a Router with a NAT Firewall?

if so, you need to research which ports may need to be forwarded to your local IP address, or set up a port trigger setup that will allow you to receive... I got mine to work like that a year or so ago...

i am only using a cable modem.... i dont know what a NAT Firewall is ... or if iam using one ?

please correct me if iam wrong , but arent routers used if you have more than one pc in the house , if that is the case. i only have one computer .

what exactly is a firewall, are there general settings , i really have no clue.

FYI - DSL & Cable 'modems' are called routers this may clear things up alittle

thank you for the clarification ... iam using a Motorola Router from Comcast..but i had the same problem when i was on dial up as well, just never really bothered me much , its not really that important , just interested in learning...
