sbc305 making 400hp

For the amount of money you are going to spend building up a 305, you can buy a 5.3 LS motor and trans for less, it's going to be 100x more reliable and be much more efficient in stock form. Throw some heads, cam, and intake on it and be way above a 305 on boost.

400WHP can put you mid 11's easy with the right suspension.

In a probably 3300-3500lb car? I still don't see 400whp out of a 305 very cheaply.

I am not exactly sure what it takes $$ wise for that to happen with a 305.

3rd gens can weigh anywhere from 3000-3500

Not any different then a 350 so not expensive. I'm sure there would be valve clearance/combustion chamber issues with good heads though

So pretty much what I said for a normal car. 3000 sounds like a stripped out car.

I believe that 305's were 2 bolt mains, so yeah any legitimate power is going to shoot the crank right out the oil pan.

My SS was in the 14s when i got it.

Ditch it for a 350 and be done with it. So many ways to upgrade the 350 dirt cheap, not to mention you could pick up a 4 bolt motor for under $200.

Not that hard to do. Had my 79 elcamino in the 13's with a cam intake and converter still using the quadrajunk carb. Never dynoed though.

go 350 if you want to do anything. then you can do 383 or so. and actually make some tq and power.

I parts are interchangeable on 305/350 but its still a waste of time and $$$. You want 400whp, best/quickest/ way is Summit Racing cam vortec heads and intake and a 150 shot... DONE.

I've got a 305 on the stand in the garage and there is no way it's going in the Camaro regardless of how bad I wanna get it together

Skip the 305's Ive blown one up in stock form just beating on it. Eff that. You could build a beast of a small block for under 2 grand easily.

My 86 trans am ran a 15.0 all day bone stock.... I never hit 14's ever

If you want to build a 305, find a sprint car site. They have a class that is required to run a 305 sbc based motor. Guys are getting like 600 hp out of them and run them till the block cracks. They're even trying to get dart or world to make aftermarket 305 blocks for them because they're starting to run the local auto yards dry of 305's.
