Chances are they found a loop-hole in the security system of the EVO's and are exploiting it. The one stolen out of a locked garage was most likely a professional car thief ring so it is gone for good. If a pro targets your car, There is very little you can do to prevent them from taking it.
Alarm systems are generally installed the same way in same cars. So if they target an EVO, They just have an alarm installed on one and practice defeating it.
Things to do to reduce the chances of your car being stolen:
1. Search web for any possible security issues with your car. Hopefully someone will have a fix for the problem. As an example:
I know back in the mid 90's folks were stealing Saturns like crazy because If you had one of the plastic "valet" keys that came with the car, You filed it a certain way and it would open and start 90% of the Saturn cars.
2. If you have an alarm system installed, Do not advertise the brand or the place that installed it. Better yet buy it yourself and install it yourself. If you hide the brain box and wires in odd places, it will make it difficult for them to disable it quickly. Adding things like a kill switch with it in an odd location is also very helpful.
3. Don't blast stereo systems or hot rod within 5 blocks of your house. This might attract attention that someone in the neighborhood has a performance car with expensive stereo equipment inside. Also don't blast your stereo in your driveway while waxing your car. If they pass by they will know where the car is and can guess how expensive the equipment is.
4. Don't post pictures or videos online with your license plate. This is a huge one and also a very hard one to stop. Car shows and cruise nights are the largest places the thieves can locate specialty vehicles. If you are at a cruise or show and you see someone taking excessive pics or showing an unusually high intrest, They may be targeting your car. All they need to do is look up the DMV records and they will have your address. You have already provided them pics and vids so they can find an out of country buyer. If it's an older car, Pics and vids can show them the condition of the parts. Older Camry's are mostly stolen for their parts. When a Camry gets 8-10 years old the chances of it getting stolen rise up quickly.
Anything you can do to make the thief spend more time trying to get your car started is a good thing. Generally a thief will only spend XX amount of time on a car before he moves onto the next.
As I said above though, If they want it they will get it. My cousin had his 1976 SD455 Trans Am stolen out of a fenced security lot and he had the club, A hook clamp from the steering wheel to the brake pedal, a hook clamp from the shifter to the clutch pedal, an alarm system, and a kill switch hidden in the seat frame rail. It took them 1 minute and 12 seconds to steal his car, 2 Corvettes, and a Cadillac. They backed in 5 flatbeds thru the fence, hooked up the cars and dragged them onto the flatbeds before the parking lot security guards even knew what was going on. They saw the flatbeds driving away with the cars alarms blaring. He never saw his car again.
