Ok, I nuked the old thread b/c I wasn't sure how to utilize ideas I was having. But after much thought and doing a bit of research I'm happy to report something new that I hope will help the community out greatly.
I've found a way for a member to keep the site updated on their status. This will come in handy during the warmer months when we're all out doing car stuff or just out hanging around. Say I'm at Taco Bell in Schaumburg and want to know if anyone in the area wants to meet up but I only have one or two numbers....well, heres what I can do...
Step 1:
Register an account on Twitter http://twitter.com/
Be sure to use your TCG username. Make sure you leave the private box UNCHECKED in your settings.
Step 2:
Configure your twitter settings to allow cell phone use (Settings > device). Once your phone has been configured, you can now send a SMS message to your twitter page updating your status.
To do this, send a text message to 40404. The txt can be something simple like "At Chipotle in Streets of Woodfield. Anyone want to meet up in the next 20 minutes?". Something to let people know whats up.
Step 3:
Post your Twitter username in this thread
Step 4:
Click on TCGer Status in the Navbar or click this link to see what others are doing http://crowdstatus.com/ChicagoGaragecrowd.aspx
The crowd status page updates whenever someones twitter page updates (since twitter does not offer groups). Now you can see what everyone is doing and if anything is going on.
Step 5:
Great success
Notes: To make it easier to add you to the crowd page, make sure to post a quick note on your twitter page so that it will post to crow status immediately.
