Are you kidding? The world renowned turkey testilce festival is held there!

Seriously, it will probably pass. There's another dragstrip going up nearby, and it's going to cut into Byron's business. The community will try to protect what business it has by being competitive. There is not a lot of industry in Byron that I could see. I imagine that the dragstrip contributes a substantial amount towards local taxes.

Any resident opposition would have been voiced through the board meeting, the judge will just formalize things, it’s 95% done. As for tax base contribution, up until a few years ago, the Byron Nuclear Power Plant was contributing just about everything until they were reassessed and their value was cut in half resulting in half the taxes paid to the city. The city can use the extra money now that the school funding is being effected by this. The community is primarily an affluent “burb” style hamlet so they had a little power to block Ron Leek for a while.

The other thing that may have prompted this is the recent crack-down on cruising, lot hanging and ricer’s over the past month or so. The main argument from the enthusiast community was that there was no outlet for us to go to for speed. I’m sure the powers that be in Rockford leaned a little on Byron to allow for the extended hours. Ron has fought for many years to get this done. Now we all can finally race at night. Now those pesky Mustang kids can slip off into the darkness after being beat by the FWD 4-door family cars!

Ron V. I have yet to hear about another local track opening, what information do you have?
