I wouldn't do it. How old is this girl? Why can't she do things on her own? I am not trying to be a dick, but a lot of times when girls see that you come to the rescue for them they take advantage of it. Then when they find something better they take off and leave. They have all the shit you bought them or paid for and you are left with nothing.

She can do things on her own just fine, Back when she bought the truck she had no credit, so the opted to have her mother take up the loan for decent interest.

Now with her having no job, and a new residence, no bank in their right mind would give her a loan. This is not her being incapable, this is her in a REALLY bad way thanks to the situation.

She can afford to pay off 6 grand of it, but then she'd have nothing left and still owe 4 grand on the truck...

Like I already mentioned, I've known her for nearly a decade, and she isn't vain or shallow, she won't just pick up and leave. And if she did, I'd have a 23K truck that I only owe 10K on.

My main concern is still that of the truck being mine, and her making payments, driving it, etc. I've been talking to her all day, and she is completely confident she will be able to make the payments without a problem, and is comfortable with the fact that she'd still be in the same position as she was with when her mother had the loan...

Why would you worry about this now? Her parents didn't say they were going to take the truck, did they? Just have her continue to make the payments on her truck.
If you end up buying it or whatever she will end up driving it, wrecking it etc... and the value will go down and you will be stuck with it. It just sounds like it will be a big mess. She will say its hers cause she made payments on it, you will say its yours etc... Or when she breaks up with you she will tell the judge that its hers and you bought it for her as a gift. See it all the time.
Only way I would ever do this for a girl is if she was my wife
Like I said not trying to be a dick, just trying to save you from a whole lot of unnecessary problems.

They have told her if she is late even a day, they are taking the truck. Since they have fired her, and dropped her from insurance, and are cancelling her phone her first month of expenses on her own is going to be tremendous. The only way to stop from loosing the truck this month would be to start pulling from her savings, and she'd still have the stress of them holding this over her.

If I buy it there is no arguing about who paid what on it. I'd take out a loan for $X, and it would be mine, Period. Moving forward, if she makes payments on it, I have no attachment to the truck, and she can do what she wants with it so long as payments are on time (she has never had an issue with this in the past). If she can't make payments and we are still together, I'd sell it, and just give her the profit. If things break off on good terms, I will offer the same thing. If she wants to try to 'screw my credit' I'd be stuck with a truck that is worth twice what is owed on it, so I wouldn't really be in a bad spot.

There is no ground to stand on if the title is in my name, and possession is 9/10ths the law, so I'm not sure how anyone could say "He got it for me as a gift" in court and expect to get it back unless we are married and getting divorced.

I appreciate your opinion, but I still don't see any way to really get screwed $ wise on this...

he never answered how old she is....
either way, i have to agree to a certain degree. keep your nose clean and it will be less problems for you

She is 22, She worked the same job for nearly 5 years prior to working for her parents, and has some college education. I'm 24 for the record.

She graduated HS @ 16, I graduated @17 (for those who noticed how long we've known each other earlier in the thread)

This sounds like a good way to get screwed. Provide her with input and solutions, but financially let her figure it out on her own.

Also, there sounds like there is more to this story.

She graduated at 16 or dropped out at 16? If she graduated at 16, I would imagine she must be very smart to graduate that early. If she was that smart, I have a hard time believing she'd be working for $9/hour at her parent's company.

I'd like to believe there is as well, from what I've gathered her behavior reminds her mother and father of her older sister who has made a few bad decisions in her life (Got knocked up, abusive boyfriend, uneducated). Her dad scolds her for being 'useless' etc. She did poorly when she attended college, and I'm still unclear for who paid for that, so I suspect they are disappointed and angry over that still since they are known for holding crazy grudges.

But at the end of the day, she quit her job in the career path that she enjoyed to help the family business, and has basically been fucked due to that decision.

So why not sell the truck for something cheaper like $10k? What girl needs a $20k truck?

It was originally a 30K Truck , and she used to race MotoCross, and her family owns a large ranch property down southwest, so having a capable truck was useful, and as she has said in the past "It's bad-ass".

She doesn't need a 20K truck, and I've already mentioned earlier the idea of selling it for something cheaper, but I've also made clear that the title isn't in her name, so that complicates even selling it drastically. They will enjoy retaining this power/control over her life even after she moves, and we both feel that is something that needs to be cut.

She graduated at 16. We are both July Birthdays, and she graduated a year early. Her parents basically told her they'd continue paying for her phone, and insurance, and let her continue to live rent free if she came and worked for them (Late last year). So $9 an hour but with no expenses basically isn't bad at all.

if you want the truck since its a good deal buy it and drive it, let her drive one of your cars for free since your a nice guy, you need to cover your bases with girls and haveing things in your name. I bought a house with a girl I dated for 5 years but I got the loan on my own and didnt charge her rent just incase, evean tho I never thought we would break up, a year later we broke up and I still have my house and all my stuff since I didnt put her name near anything I ever bought

Really looking for input specific to how I can actually get screwed in this 'deal'. At the end of the day, I'd own a 20+K truck for 10K, Regardless of me just flipping it for her to go buy something cheaper, or her making payments on it under my name... Also looking for people who are getting married/recently married and how they handle car things like this (Couples who keep their money separate).

@1quick98_gs If I buy it and end up 'keeping' it as my own, I'd let her drive my Explorer, or even just give it to her title and all since so much has already been paid down on this truck... Then I wouldn't feel bad at all if things go sour and she doesn't do anything about me owning the truck.

I've heard that is the way to go. I would just say that since I'm paying the mortgage, you can pick up the utilities and groceries. That way it can't be construed as 'rent' or 'splitting' the mortgage.

I'm in a similar situation. My girlfriend just moved in, but I'm not going to have her pay 'rent' or 'split the mortgage'. If we get married, then I'm cool with splitting things because it's a more solid commitment.

If you buy the truck and she makes the payment, she will have a paper trail that shows her mom owned it she was making payments, then you bought it and she was making payments so she payed for the whole truck evean tho it was in your name, I think if she wanted to take you to court over that she would win since she could show proof of all the payments made on the truck, maybe not tho I just always make sure there wont be a paper trail on shit like that

This is the plan for My GF as well right now since she will be moving in either until she finds a place, or permanently.

Have the Utilities put in her name (usually around $200-250 a month), so she can build some more credit, and so there is no complicating things with Rent.

yeah she bought groceries, and she payed me cash for her part of the phone bill and half the utilities

I could say she paid me that much money a month to lease the truck, or that was her rent, or W/e. Without a written agreement there is still no ground to stand on.

but again, I'm not worried about that because if things go south, worst case scenario I wouldn't make any money from buying it since the truck isn't upside down. I really don't see any ways I'd get screwed.
