i know i posted about sprint getting the iphone but i think it was the iphone 4...this is rather surprising if true. i dont want all you apple nobs stealing my bandwidth.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has entered into an agreement with Apple to purchase over $20 billion worth of iPhones over the next four years — that’s around 30 million iPhones. It’s said that Sprint won’t even break even on the transaction until 2014, which is surely a huge risk on Sprint’s part, but why? I have been going back and forth for weeks with one of my incredibly solid industry contacts on a piece of information that I couldn’t really process at first — information that is so unbelievable, even from a source this solid, that I couldn’t report it. With this new WSJ report on an Apple/Sprint deal, however, it doesn’t look so crazy. Hit the break for more.

I have been told that Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 — yes the real iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S — as an exclusive. And it will be a 4G WiMAX device. AT&T and Verizon would launch the iPhone 4S and get the iPhone 5 some time in the first quarter of next year as an LTE device. Globally, the iPhone 5 might be available as a 4G HSPA+ device. The iPhone 4S Apple will introduce tomorrow will feature the following:
A low voltage Apple A5 CPU (it won’t be the same as the iPad 2 chip, clock for clock).
Updated front and back camera sensors. FaceTime HD in the front, 8 megapixel 1080p HD video recording in the back.
Multiband 3G Qualcomm chipset — North American & International GSM/UMTS/HSPA bands for AT&T and Global carriers, North American CDMA & International GSM/UMTS/HSPA bands for Verizon and Sprint.
NFC support
Metal or “premium” plastic on the back case.

Here is what my source said about the iPhone 5 that will launch as a Sprint exclusive:
Faster CPU.
Larger 4-inch screen, similar to LG’s NOVA display but higher resolution.
1GB of RAM.
Slightly larger design overall but thinner, and a larger battery.
32GB
iPhone 5 exclusive software and APIs (Assistant).
Dedicated Assistant button, possibly integrated with the new home button, “think gestures or a two-stage button like a camera shutter key)

I told my source that even if Sprint paid Apple hundreds of millions, a Sprint iPhone 5 exclusive still would never happen. $20 billion in guaranteed iPhone sales, though? We’ll see tomorrow

Seems like that would be a ridiculous venture for all involved. Doesn't seem like Apple really likes developing two similar products (phones at least) side by side like other companies. Maybe if the iPhone 5 was much later down the line? IDK, something just seems fishy.

would be a massive gamble for sprint.

Yep, but given Sprint's position in the market it would be a pretty solid gamble. I don't see a downside to this. Sprint has aggressively priced plans and with an iPhone exclusive, this could attract a lot of new customers. The issue will be with the network and customer service (which stinks).

I see a downside. People locked into contracts with ATT and Verizon that just want to upgrade. I personally dont want to switch carriers again, on top of having to pay a termination fee for my fiance. Ill toss my apple in the garbage and take a big bite of the old ice cream sammich if that is the case.

I ran into an old friend who's a regional manager at sprint.. i think it's true that the iPhone 5 will go to sprint.. but exclusively? im not sure. Sprint is definitely getting the iPhone 5 though i thought it was going to be this month...

Sprint will get the phone, but I dont think they will get the exclusivity of the 5.

No live conference tomorrow, and I forgot to take into account the time change. Ill have to wake up early to see cause I will be pre ordering if it is what I want to see and they open it up.

Fish, CNN.com has an article on it... Im on my phone and for some reason can't copy-paste the link. But its rumored to be wider and longer than the iPhone 4. And will have a tear drop shape for the back, and 8 megapixel camera...

Ohh Ive been keeping up. Dont you worry. :nutz: Im just saying this rumor is BS at best, and if it is true, Apple will be shooting themselves in the foot since most of their current customers will have a hard time justifying a "4S" VS a "5". I know I will, and I dont even have a 4.

Could happen, but when the iPhone went to Verizon people jumped ship. I can see Sprint taking more AT&T customers vs. Verizon.

not as many people 'jumped ship' as you may think, being unable to use the internet while talking was/is a deal breaker for a lot of people, and I personally have no ATT Horror stories and have been with them for about 4 years now...

I read earlier in the year that large numbers would be switching, but haven't followed their earning reports to see the net loss.

AT&T service is horrible in the city. I have a few friends on AT&T's iPhone in the city and they drop calls and have slow data connections. I've seen more than a few surveys that show AT&T's network as dead last.
