Default Good 4x4 ATV?

I know nothing about ATVs, but want to buy a used 4x4/Utility ATV. Which are some of the better brands/models? I'm looking for something to plow the driveway with in the winter, and then still be able to use for trail riding, etc.

Honda foreman or rubicon for straight axle for pulling stumps and heavy rear work. Yamaha grizzly 660 for irs for speed and agility and lighter work.

Foreman, rubicon, and grizzlys in the early mid 2000s are equivalent to 7.3s in the atv world. You. Can't. Fucking. Kill. Them.

I was going to drive to Maine for a foreman I found from a very good guy I knew at the time and then boom a grizzly popped up and I jumped on it.

For reference 4 years ago I got a 2005 660 grizzly with 2900 miles 370 hours so that's average 8 mph which is good, for $3200. I literally searched for 8 months and was going to go to Maine for that Honda then this grizz popped up and I snatched it up. Only reason guy was selling was to pay his propane bill which hit $6/gal that winter. He was hurting bad

I dont think I'll ever buy another that isnt a Honda.

I bought a 2 year old Recon in 2005 for the farm. I'm not very nice to it. Literally the only things we've done is change oil, fill with gas, and a set of tires. It still even has the original battery.

I don't know your budget but Yamaha Kodiak 450 can be bought new for under $6,000.

The Foremans in that price range are solid axle IIRC.

After riding Frank's Foreman, then my Scrambler, and now my Grizzly, I will never buy anything without IRS.

What is your price range? That will clarify things a lot.

That being said, everything said already is spot on. One small correction is the 2015+ Rubicon is the same bike as a Foreman except it has IRS. If you want a quad that requires gas and oil changes only and will live longer than you, buy a Honda. I prefer the Rubicon for the IRS. Carter is right, once you ride a straight axle, you'll want IRS.

Now if you want a cheap quad that will never die, I own a 2000 Foreman 400. The thing is a tank and I bought it for $1500. Might as well not have suspension though. ATV suspension has come a long way in the past decade or so.

The last option is if you're looking to get into the sport and will most likely be upgrading in the next 5 years. A Polaris Sportsman 570 is hard to beat for the cost and performance. That being said maintenance will most like be more and they have intermittent quirky issues most likely due to poorer build quality. You get what you pay more.

also, fun thing about a 2000 foreman 400 for 1500 bucks

is it's always going to be worth, around 1500 bucks.

Oh for sure. Honda's also have good enough resale that there is no point buying one a couple years old unless you come across someone that absolutely has to shed the payment.

Probably under 4k. The Grizzly seems to be one of the best options. As I mentioned in the OP, I'll be plowing with it in the winter and doing some trail riding with it in the summer... I plan on buying some land in Michigan in the next couple years, so I wouldn't mind having something very off-road capable that can still carry a saw/etc through the woods.

At that price point the Grizzly is a good choice. Spivitz is right about the Rincon too. That is Honda's Griz competitor. For 4K you can get a 680 which comes with EFI and IRS. The Rincon has a 3 speed, torque converter automatic so there is no CVT belt. They seem to be pretty bulletproof but if the trans has issues it gets costly.

When I was looking for an ATV few years ago , it didn't make much sense to buy a used one as 4-5 year old ATVs were like $1-2K cheaper then brand new . I ended up buying brand new Grizzly 550 for $6K with plow and winch installed . Remember it's an ATV not a car , it will be hard to find one that wasn't run hard .
