Is it possible to get a bike for $500-$1K?

Is it realistic to find a bike for sale for around $500-1K? Obviously nothing powerful/special but just something to cruise around town in?

I'm curious too as a first time rider, I've heard so many different theories and explanations about which bike to get. I'm no closer to deciding today then I was a month ago.
I'm 5'9" about 240lbs.

I like the Honda 599/Hornet, the Suzuki M50 Boulevard and the Suzuki Bandit 400
budget $1500-$4000??
