So i'm trying to time my 400sbc. I took the intake manifold off to clean and sandblast. Putting everything together and the timing is still off a tad. I broke 3 studs in my intake manifold that connects my carb and this project is getting me edgy as time rolls on.

I replaced the carb gasket because the carb was shooting out gas from the top.

The timing mark doesn't line up with TDC for cylinder one. So we lined cylinder one up to TDC and put the distibutor and cap on so its pointing at cylinder one.

could the vacuum leak of the bad carb gasket cause it to shoot the gas out or is it the timing?

If gas is coming out the top of the carb then you have:
A stuck float
or
A dirty float valve
or
too much fuel pressure

What carb is it? Holley, Edelbrock, GM quadrajet, etc.?

If the timing marks don't line up, it could be a jumped timing chain. Setting the distributor to match the #1 piston is fine, But the cam would still be off. How far off is the timing mark?

A jumped timing chain will not cause the carb to leak. They are two seperate problems.
