Porsche announced today that a car called the 911 GT2 RS MR, which has 700 horsepower, did the ‘Ring thing in a claimed record 6 minutes and 40.3 seconds. That is incredibly, objectively fast, even if it’s also true that we are probably a few years past the hysteria of ‘Ring times actually meaning something.

But this was no ordinary GT2 RS, in as much as any GT2 RSis ordinary: the MR stands for Manthey-Racing, the ‘Ring-based Porsche racing team. Porsche says the car “had been especially set up for the ‘Nordschleife’ by Porsche engineers and Manthey-Racing experts.” The chassis and aerodynamics were modified, and specifically set up by Manthey-Racing for this endeavor. The lap was achieved in “autumnal but dry conditions.”

Porsche and MR are being tight lipped at this point.

Also, Porsche also owns 51% of Manthey-Racing.

The MR package for the GT2 RS consists of various improvements to the aerodynamics and the suspension setup of the car. Porsche is being notably tight-lipped on the modifications, but a larger rear wing has been teamed with ‘canards’ on the front corners for improved downforce. The car is fitted with Manthey’s coilover spring/damper units, and features upgraded brake pads and brake lines, while the wheels are magnesium. An additional water tank (for the GT2’s intercooler water spray system) means the full complement of 691bhp can be used for longer before refills are required. Manthey are set to reveal further details of the kit, along with pricing, in due course.

IDK if anyone remembers the episode of Top Gear when they run that Formula One course with the hot hatches and Jeremy says "It's just simply terrifying, I mean look, fine (points at the wall next to him) dead" where he points out how much room there is between the racing line and the wall. That's all I could think about when watching that, not only is the car absurdly impressive, but that driver is a BEAST.
