Best way to clean/dry floor mats?

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but my floor mats are never the same after the first time I wash them.

They become stiff as a board and never sit right anymore. What am I doing wrong? Why can't they retain their flexibility and fitment after they've been washed?

I usually just use car soap and then let them air dry in the sun. Is it the car soap that does that? I want my floor mats to be silky smooth and flaccid.

I use carpet cleaner and they are usually fine afterwards. Same stuff I use for in the house or the spray kind you buy at vatozone with a brush attached.

I have the Weather Tech for winter, but I'm sick of looking at them. I want to put my 'stock' floor mats back in.

Plus my Weather Tech's don't clean very well. I've tried a scrub brush and soap, but can never get the gritty dirt buried in the crevices.
